I have put in a short ram air intake on my '02 Elantra, the filter sits between the battery and the fuse box where the factory intake once sat. Would it be benificial to make a heat/air shield to keep it from sucking the hot air. It would be a cheap form of the K&N FIPK kit.

i like the heatshield idea, it also keeps the filter from getting dirty faster<img src=/images/forums/snitz/thumbup.gif width=25 height=18 border=0>

I just don't know if I should paint it or leave it bare sheet metal.

Try to make it a twin layer shield to reduce heat radiation/conduction(see physics 101 hehehe) and then try to get a little Thermotec tape, the 6" wide variety and do a crossweave on both the engine side and the filter side. With the aluminium stock, I also reccomend that you make a second heat shield, one to fit between the exhaust extractor assembly and the block. This will help to keep cylinder temperatures down, and squeeze out a little more Bhp...it wont be much, but every little bit would count. Also, since you'll be getting the thermotec, maybe you could get some of the 3" wide variety and have your exhaust manifold wrapped as well. If you're running the 4-1 extractor, just wrap it till the mid-pipe. If you're running the 4-2-1, try to wrap it all the way to the end pipe...it helps a little too!

Good luck!
