I think I'll get the 2002 New Beetle 1.8T + chip. I'm keeping this vehicle for 4 years. It's the only vehicle under $20,000(tax included) that comes with 4 years of warranty, 183hp with chip, leatherette interior, 0-60mph @ 6.5s, incredibly nice interior, good exterior, a big aftermarket, and best residual value compact car according to ALG.

Other cars that I have considered...
1. 2001 Tiburon + supercharger + fully loaded... It has INCREDIBLY nice exterior, but decided against it cuz build quality not as good as Volkswagen yet, and I see no advantage getting it over the NB, crappy resale value...
2. 2002 Tiburon.. Too late..Release date November/December 2001.. only 180 hp, ugly exterior much worse than 2001(my opinion, others might think otherwise), interior OK, I like the 6 speed though... but I dont see any advantage over the NB too..
3. Honda Civic... Everyone has it ugly ass car... LOOKS very cheap, but has big aftermarket... decided against it cuz everyone has it... 3 year warranty only..
4. Nissan sentra SE-R spec v, good exterior, VERY UGLY interior, LOOKS CHEAP, and comes too late at november... 3 year warranty only... Has limited slip differetial and 6 speed though... probably 0-60 at around 6.5 too.. but still not as good as NB imo..

so what do you guys think?
Plz convince me if you guys think I made a mistake...

10 year warranty, great price, killer looks (better than a beetle in my opinion), expanding aftermarket, chicks dig em, decent engine with enough horsepower to beat up on those damn civics, and of course with out a doubt people like us, and forums like this.

A Beetle is a WOMANS car. I have never seen a guy in one, except for one and hes a bit "light in the lofers", so to speak. Why do you think it has a flower vase in it? Good thing you asked. That car is not a guy car! I would never buy a beetle. That is strictly ditzy-girlie territory.

If anything go with a Jetta. Get the 1.8 or VR6...Now thats got some possibilities...but the beetle...oh boy

I eat Honda Civics for breakfast, Toyota Corollas for lunch, and Volkswagen Jettas for dinner

I don't know where you guys get this "180hp" number from, but according to NUMEROUS reports AND the president of Hyundai Motor America, it will have more horsepower than the V6 Eclipse, which has 200.

Personally I wouldn't be caught dead in a Beetle. I'd take the GK anyday, especially with the "secret" stuff we have in the works for it .

Why not the new beetle? hmmm.... how's about:

1. horrible crash rating.
2. incredibly unstable at high speeds
3. noisy noisy cabin
4. flower vase
5. so many blind spots, the car should come with a free ray charles/stevie wonder cd.
6. very very uncomfortable seats
7. major electrical problem prevelancy
8. made in mexico
9. the fact that guys will be checking your car out, hoping you're a hot girl.
10. VW lost it after the MKII gti's

oh, well... you can lead a horse to water, but.... you know....

i hope no one here gets up in arms over this whole issue as i am not trying to bash VW, but instead offer my point of view on the vehicle as i know of 3 people with them, and the fact that i have to test about 12 of them a day at work.

take care!

well, if you had to buy 1.8t, i would go with Jetta or GTI. chip from Upsolute? my friends had one, they are quick but the car can't hanle. clutch slippage...well get it from a dealer, they don't know your car has different ECU(or reprogrammed ECU) the steering wheel is extremely small and sensitive at high speed. The Engine's quiet but the Turbo's too small and if you want more power, you have to upgrade the whole turbo, i would think. and not as good build quality? i dunno about that....Honda's are more crappier than a Hyundai so...
i love my TIb, i just got new rims(800 miles on them) and i would get it over Bettle or HONDA's anyday

I love my Tib

Hmm.. according to my friend(a guy who's 6 feet) who owns a new beetle w/ upsolute chip, he says that the drive train has no problem handling a 30 hp gain... Handling is alright he says... I need the car for 4 years only so the warranty is good, hyundai is ofcourse better but vw is good enuff for me..
A new beetle has earned something like a good or excellent crash rating... LOL i'll put some pens in the flower vase, use it as a pen holder

Besides.. There are millions of new beetle out there.. with a lot of them owned by guys... how can it be classified as a girl's car?

Anyway, thank you guys for being so open minded and giving out your opinions... Much better than the honda boards who only bash

Plz check out those pics I posted above.. the beetle looks FIERCE not "cute"

Go for the jetta or golf in VW domain. Then go to HPA motorsports to see what they can do for you. I'm just saying that cuz I like the Jetta's style better!

http://www.hpamotorsports.com/stage2.htm
conversion can be done on MK4 golf/jetta as well. VW are geniuses for building such a sweet platform!!!!

Okay, I own a 2001 Beetle, not the turbo, and I race it in SCCA, it is my "current" race car, and I can tell you guys some things about it, the only reason to call it a chicks car is because it attracts them like a magnet, and as for being unstable, that is a load of bull, the non-turbo's top speed is only 122, only 5 mph away from the 2.0 140 H.P. Tibby. and it only has 115 H.P., and at those speeds it is QUITE stable, and that is without the spoiler. It's crash test are some of the best, and the mods that you can get are numerious and plentiful. It's workmanship is second to none, fit and finish is excellent. The seats ARE not uncomfortable in anyway shape or form. The one bad thing is, and to be honest, the clutch is weak in the turbos, and regularly go out in about 40,000-50,000 miles. They put the same clutch in the turbo that they use in the non-turbo, and that was a mistake, so if ya go with the turbo, get a H.D. clutch as soon as possible, or you will be replacing the flywheel too, just warning ya

As a former New Beetle owner I feel the need to clarify some extreme misconceptions:

<begin rant>

1. Complete bullsh!t - it has the best crash rating.
2. Perhaps above 150MPH, but how would you get it to 150 - LOL!
3. Compared to what, a Peterbuilt - LOL! Mine was quiet.
4. Some say that those that question their masculinity should, well that's a different post now isn't it! I had a fake red rose in mine, wanna make something of it?
5. The only blind spot was the front pillar, so WTF?
6. Mine fit me like a glove, perhaps if you run about 300+ they wouldn't be too comfortable!
7. Did you just make this sh!t up?
8. And the sun is bright, your point!
9. The masculine theme runs deep don't it?
10. ???

<end rant>

Sorry, just do some research and buy the car YOU want, not what a bunch of other people think you should drive.

Oh yeah the NB was great fun to drive, just wish 1st gear was taller.

Well look at it this way. It's going to be YOUR car not ours. Get what you like and what would make you happy. I would say tiburon, but that is me. That's what I have (duh) and that's what I'm in love with. Bottom line here: GET WHAT YOU WANT!!
