One time last summer, I was out with a bunch of friends, me and two people in my 97 Accent SOHC (all stock) and a girl and two people in her automatic Neon. We pulled up beside each other at a red light and I challenged her to a race for fun.
My car killed hers, though I figure it's because of the three-speed auto. Still, she said she had the throttle pinned, and I was surprised that my car beat hers so soundly.
Anyone else taken a Neon? I would guess they're a lot faster with the five-speed...

it definatly wasnt an R/T and it wasnt one of those racing ones [190hp, and light as HELL]

Stock neons have I THINK roughly 100hp or something, 115.. I dont really know... but they are easy kills

Just to give you some guys info on Neons since it appears that you don't know much about them.
RT's are usually no faster than base Neons. All R/T's came with the DOHC motor which was supposedly rated at 150 HP stock, but has been found not to be. The SOHC Neons Only had 132 HP, but for whatever reason a stock SOHC car and a DOHC car run almost identical 1/4 mile times. It would seem the SOHC motor had a more usable torque range. Either way a 5-speed Neon with a good driver can run 15.6-16.0's depending on how heavy the car is.
AS far as mods go--the DOHC car definitely has an advantage as more HP can be extracted from it. My 1997 DOHC Expresso ran a best of a 14.09 all motor when all was said and done. That was with extensive work done (Although I still ran the STOCK cams!) AS far as the auto Neons go----the stock auto tranny in the Neons KILLS performance. The 3 speed auto slows the car down by 1.5 seconds in the 1/4 mile. And the DOHC auto cars are the slowest of all due to the combination of no low end torque and an auto tranny. Hope this helps! BTW--I am going to be buying an Elantra GT in a few months----the Neon is being parted out since it was too much of a "race" car and I recently got married. But I will be modding the GT once it arrives---anybody have any pointers for me?

I should correct myself and say the NEW R/T's (01 and up) are faster than the stock ones. On the previous generation ones (95-99) they are not. You will see more R/T's and DOHC ones at the track running faster though because once you start modding them they are quicker. Bone stock though, there is a negligible difference.

I don' know--my Neon had a single exhaust with not even a chrome tip. of course my muffler was a Borla XR-1 sprint car staright through design and my car was loud a Shiat, but that is another story. I will say I blew 4 Neon Trannies in my time, 3 clutches and NUMEROUS driveshafts. That's what you get when you're running slicks on an N/A car with just over 200HP. ; )
Has anybody snapped any of the Elantra Driveshafts/axles yet? Just curious how they hold up at the track.....
