Hey there,
My first car was a 88 excel, I loved that car! I did do some mods to it, mostly it was hand made, I did manage to get a MSD ignition in there, plugs, wires, I had to get a header hand made for it too, then welded up the pieces myself, it was messy but it did the trick. Sadly there wasn't enough things I could buy without making them myself the rest was stereo and foglights, I was 16 and didden't have alot of cash :) Good car, brings back memories!

Hey there... Welcome to the forum. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

There are about 37 members here that own excels. They know more about excels than me so they'll probably have more answers to your questions. <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

There are a few places you could get stuff for you car. I think http://www.sharkracing.com might have some performance stuff for the excel, and I'm pretty sure http://www.hve.com.au has some parts, but they are in Australia if shipping is a problem.

Check out http://www.geocities.com/red_agt/ I have some more links up there.
[email protected] and http://www.speedstate.com/Hyundai_Section/hyundai_section.html have locations in Canada so the prices might be more reasonable, not sure if they have stuff for you though. <img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle>

Once again, I send you a warm welcome to the forums and happy tuning. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

88_Excel, welcome and I hope you enjoy your stay! Glad to see another X-1 Excel owner here!

I have an 89 GL 5-spd....what do you have? I, too have a K&N filter, plus I'm workin on making a CAI for the intake....check back soon.

Im going to e-mail you the address and e-mail of a guy who owns a 1989 Hyundai Excel in Austrailia. He has a sweet ride, with lowered spings on the front(says they improve handling and Excelleration) and bigger tires, of course they improve braking, acceleration, and handling(something that this car doesn't have in stock form!). So watch your mailbox because I'm going to send it today!

I, too have a 3-door Excel and it is a great design. It easily holds anything that will fit into the hatch area and then some...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

To determine if its a base, GL, or GLS, look at the sixth number of your VIN(on the dashboard looking through the windshield on the left). If the 6th number is a 1, its a base. If its 2, its a GL. If its 3, then its a GLS. Or, easier, look at the back of the car. If it says Excel, its base. If it says Excel GL, then its a GL(Hon-DUH), and if its a GLS, it will say...Excel GLS. Plus, if its a manual, the base Excels use the Mitsu KM-161 4-spd whereas the GL and GLS manuals use the KM-162 5-spd transaxle.

The 1468cc engine is easy to upgrade, provided the right parts and you know what you're doing. The easiest thing I've done is the K&N filter. I am trying to come up with a CAI(Cold Air Intake) to replace the front tube(P/N 28210-21200). Its easy and these motors have a lot of potential, but you just need to know what you're doing. Peace.

Well don't say that, it has the potential to be a great multimedia car. Being a automatic, performance won't be the way to go, so a custom stereo system install could be the ticket, with monitors etc, if its in good condition you could do it up awesome!

True! You can do some body mods(front, side, and rear extensions) plus some wild spoilers. I don't have anything like that, yet<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>. A stereo is also a good way to customize your car, so is window tint. Try some minor exhaust mods. I just said 'God help the automatic Excels' becuase I know those cars to be problematic, mainly its the transmission that goes. If you want to do some engine mods, you can try beefing up the stock tranny or trying to find another transmission that will bolt up. Some companies make adaptors for FWD and RWD cars and trucks, so it should be relatively easy to do. Good luck!<img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

Your car not only needs to go quick and run well but it also need to look good!! I wouldn't like dragging a stock looking XL against a pcoket rocket Honda. Maybe some external mods as well??<img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

Hey, whats wrong with a 'sleeper'?

Thats how Hon-DUH drivers get smart and stop beatin down on Hyundais! Here's a solution: Get a 4G63T engine and FWD 5-spd transaxle from a Talon/Eclipse, build it up to the max, then don't do anything on the outside except tires and maybe even wheels(if you can find them). Then, go hunt down some Honduhs.

What is that engine that you said? are you sure that it will work in my car? Oh and i wouldn't mind my car being a sleeper it would be great surprising all the people that i race!

88, thats just an idea that I saw some guy with an 87 GLS do....its very complicated. His is fast though, with 136 horsepower at the wheels. I saw him eat a Civic Si alive. It was a tight squeeze, however..... it would work. You would need to find a Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T(FWD Turbo) and get the tranny also. I also have seen some Mitsubishi Starion turbo conversions(AWD and all), but some tunnel fabrications were required.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> Keep pondering ideas, 88, and keep us posted!<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Has anybody that owns an Excel, or early model Scoupe looked at RPW? They offer performance parts for the Mitsubishi Engines, and have dealers here in the US.

http://www.rpw.com.au/New%20Website/MP001.htm

Here is the web site. Take a look.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

What was the 2351cc (2.4) in early Sonatas? The 4G64? I knew it was an 8 valve engine. I am leaning towards this becuase I've seen torque figures of 180lb-ft. Of course, a car that has 81lb-ft to begin with will need some stiffening up. I am also looking to fit a 5-spd onto it. What do you guys think? A 4G64 or a 4G63?
