I was running my Tibby all this time with stock exhaust with Magnaflow muffler. Two days ago, I had this weird feeling that I must get cat back for my car but I did not have enough money to buy brand-name stainless steel cat back.
I decided to put custom exhaust and since I already had performance muffler I thought that it would not cost much to have custom full cat back.
Right after my physics class, I went to local muffler shop and let them put a custom 2.5" exhaust (I was thinking about putting 2.25" exhaust but I changed my mind) for around $100. This is what happened after exhaust replacement.

1. Smooth Acceleration - I really like how my car now accelerate smoothly without my car lagging because of air pressures. However this brings one bad result. That is, I felt that I lost low-end power although I am not quite sure about this. Once my car start to accelerate, however, the 2.5" really helps me to accelerate better at higher RPM, at least it feels like it.
The reason why I am saying this is that something different happened when I accelerate my car. Before custom exhaust, when I press gas pedal fully after stopping, my tire almost immediately make that "squeak" sound (when tire spins) then my car accelerated. However after installing 2.5" pipe, I did not hear tire spinning sound until I got to almost top RPM at first gear (automatic trasmission).

2. Sound factor - I just love how my car sounds. Really deep and aggressive. I think Magnaflow muffler and bigger exhaust matches pretty well (I also removed resonator). I just love how people turn their head when I drive my car.

3. 2.5" or 2.25"? - I am pretty satisfied with 2.5" pipe because it gives my car smoother acceleration. However if you want low end power, you should probably get 2.25"

By the way, muffler and exhaust sounds like a $150,000 car... well just the sound anyway <img src=/images/forums/snitz/smile.gif width=15 height=15 border=0>

Our cars rely on back preasure to develope torque. Putting a 2.5 exhaust you probably lost a lil too much back preasure. Therefore you lost torque which means you loose low end power.

A Ballistic Turbo kit from our online store should fix that <img src=/images/forums/snitz/thumbup.gif width=25 height=18 border=0>

I would go with 2.25 max unless I was running a turbo, for the reasons youu mentioned, loss of low end. My 2 cents

I'm willing to bet he didn't loose too much lowe end with the 2.5, and gained on the top end. You aren't going to loose or gain much of anything with an exhaust (it's a trade off). You will however change your torque curve for sure (verified this on a dyno...Pacesetter 2.25 moved the torque curve down 1,000rpms) and probably change the hp curve a little towards the top.

You want to put a 2.5" exhaust on the Tib and Elantra. Stock is 2". 2.25" is not gonna be worth the money.

I beg to differ... That extra 1/4 inch helps. I have done this on my car and have really liked the improvement. At the track there is a very nice improvement over just having a performance muffler. I ran against a Tib with BTB, CAI, 1.8 cam, and a performance muffler and beat him at the finish. It wasn't by much but I am only running a CAI and full cat back exhaust from MBRP.
I had him off of the start and held it to the end. I noticed the cam on the other guy's car near the end cause he was starting to catch me.

So in that instance... the 2.25 is better than just a 2" pipe. Considering the other mods on his car.<img src=/images/forums/snitz/wink.gif width=15 height=15 border=0>

Was your custom exhaust mandrel bent, or not? If its not, then the bends are probably about 2" wide in the bends. I have had experts tell me not to go wider than 2.25 because of the need for backpressure...if you lost low end torque, then you released too much backpressure.

After driving few more days with custom cat back, I realized that I did not lose much HP (or not at all). However I can definetely feel my Tibby running better at higher speed. Now I can easily reach 110MPH without any sweat. It just run damn smooth at higher speed with custom exhaust.

I think my exhaust pipe is not mandrel bent but this guy did a great job bending the pipe.

Who are the experts? The people here? No one here is an expert. I have spoken with experts at Hyundai service, and several performance shops in town. It's up for debate, but as far as I know...2.5" is a newer fad, and 2.25" is already a well established norm.

Stock Tibruons and Elantras come wiht 1.75 inch exhaust! I had a muffler shop measure it.
going to a 2.5inch exhaust will make your first gear more usr friendly ( you can keep it in gear longer and not buck. But you will lose low end torque. naturally aspirated vehicle would benefit from an exhaust .25 or .50inch larger in piping. 2.25 is all around better. Gain horsepower and torque. brullen has acatback for the Tiburon and so does Speedstate, bothy feature 2.25 diameter piping. FYi
hope this helps

i thought the tiburon came with 2" piping stock?

i don't think 2.5" custom piping would be so bad considering the bends.
