Bargain Soft-top Exposed
The cover has been blown on Hyundai's ambitious plans to take the cabrio market by storm with this drop-top edition of the forthcoming Coup? Developed in Germany but styled at Hyundai's Los Angeles studio, the newcomer is expected to go on sale in 2003.
It's based around the all-new Coup? and insiders claim the cabrio will be every inch as practical as its hard-topped stablemate. Carrying a premium of around ?,500 over the Coup? the entry-level convertible will cost ?6,000, making it the cheapest four-seater soft-top car on the market. Featuring the 105bhp 1.6-litre engine that's destined to debut in the Coup? and mated to a five-speed gearbox, the basic cabriolet will be more about style than performance. However, driving enthusiasts should be more than satisfied with the promise of the 2.7-litre V6 model. Set to cost ?0,500, it will have a 0-60mph time of less than eight seconds and a 135mph top speed.
To ensure that the handling is up to standard, additional stiffening will help reduce body shake. Safety is another key concern, and will be addressed with extra side-impact protection and rollover bars. As with owners of the Coup? the cabrio driver will enjoy electrically adjustable Recaro seats and the reassurance of all-round disc brakes. Traction control will be included and a power hood is expected to be standard throughout the range.

I think the roll bars will be a pop out, or dynamic, not stationary.
