i went to my dealer today to ask about a transmission swap... they said it'd run me like 2-3 g's!!! and on top of that, they didn't have anyone experienced enough with manual's to put one together. now, dan told me a could get a whole tranny for only like 400. is it really that hard to put in a new transmission that they would charge like 2000-2500 more just for installation??

Find a local mom and pop repair shop that knows hyundais. If you can't find one, find one that at least does imports.

Ask THEM how much to replace a tranny, then ask them how much to swap an auto for manual. They should less than $500 apart in price.

didn't catch that last part. you mean it shouldn't be less that 500 from what the dealer told me or 500 for installation?

He means the price to replace your auto tranny with a manual should be no more than $500 more than it would be to replace it with another auto.

should be between $500 and $1000 for a normal auto to auto swap, so $1000 to $1500 for a auto to manual swap.

If you do give it a go yourself, do yourself a favor and buy the factory service manuals for your year car from your dealership. Also buy the Factory Electrical Service manual. Should be about $120 for all three books. using them, you should be able to do the swap yourself if you are a compentent mechanic.

Its called a cherry picker, and the local autozone or Advance Auto Parts should rent them out as well as many tools.

i started this thread a while ago, and since then, i'm still searching for a manual tranny/clutch and brake pedal, and all the goddies that i need for the auto-manual swap. i've been emailing all the parts places i can find, but i'm being blatantly ignored for some reason. can anyone help me track these parts down??

You know this is one thing that I will never understand. Why the hell does it cost about 1500-2000$ more to buy a auto. from the dealier, and then it costs 1000$ more to get a mannual put in it? Did I miss something. Manuals are faster anyways, right?!

ok, i've been going at this for a while, now i went to the official hyundai parts page, and i found that if i bought all the parts for them for a manual, it would cost upwards of $900+. i heard that around $400 is usually what they go for. can anyone track one down for me? i'td be much appreciated

Did you try some local junkyards? If you don't care if its brand new, there's a chance you'll find an economically priced transmission. When I was looking for engines for my car, I found four at one place (Mitsu 1.8) for about $800. I don't know if that's a good price, but it sounded nice to me.
Of course, that engine would be much more common, but who can say what you'll find?
