Hey Doc, I have a tendency to over think alot of things and the latest is, when a person is cold why exactly do their teeth chatter and shiver? Just wondering cuz its really cold out and i couldn't hear my radio over my teeth on my way to work this morning

I'm no doctor but I had the chattering teeth today. I always thought it was an involuntary muscle spasm to try and create energy... or heat. Then again, I'm dumb

Carl aka "kustomaccent",

Mouse pretty much explained it! It's your bodies natural defenses to fight off the cold and to make heat to warm the body (it doesn't create energy it uses it to produce heat). Same thing when your sick and you develop chills the body is trying to make itself hotter (resulting in a temperature) to fight off a virus and or bacteria.

ok so while we are on the subject of cold, what causes cold hands? My hands are always cold even when I don't think that I'm that cold.

YEAH! I'm smart. Chattering teeth, who'da thunk it? BTW, my response to the cold hands would've been poor circulation. Exercise more. Least that's what my MD told me about my feets. (yes, i said feets)

I understand the whole chattering thing but why do you have hot flashes sometimes?

That's usually related to hormonal imbalances. Some of which are related to too much sugar intake. Too much sugar causes the hormonal balances to change. The typical American diet has alot of sugar in it. In women hot flashes are also due to hormonal imbalances. Once the hormones are balanced and the diets changed, no more hot flashes.
