Hey Doc, keep forgetting to ask you, but now that my tonsils have swollen up again cuz I have a cold, it's reminded me. It's also pissing me off! Anyway, I asked my doctor to take these damn things out a few times, cuz everytime I have a cold or Flu, they swell up and are sore as hell! And feel like the size of golf balls. I can eat and drink and stuff but it's just a PITA! Anyway, he said he won't take them out, cuz he says he rather have my tonsils infected than my lungs? I really didn't understand him. Do tonsils serve a purpose so that all the bacteria or whatever infects that, instead of somewhere else on the body?
Or should I look for a new doctor?

Thanks!

Tonsils are needed to fight off infection. When they swell it indicates they are doing their job (helping the body fight off infection), which is a good thing. However, if you're continually getting sore throats every month or every other month, then you may want to consider getting another opinion.

What's your diet like?
Do you exercise?

Hmm ok,... so they are supposed to swell up,.. ok,... so my doctor was not on crack
Thanks

I exercise pretty regulary,.. and I try to eat as lean as I can, however, I've been eating out lots over the holidays and such, so maybe all the fatty stuff at the restaurants are doing it?

And they don't swell up ALL the time, only when I have a cold/flu. Maybe 2 or 3 times a year,... but it's almost bound to happen in January / Feb! It's just a PITA when it swells up, the last few nights I've barley slept cuz it's sore all night,... the doctor, prescribes Amoxicillin (sp?) And I guess it helps, but like I say, just a PITA.

If I were to take them out, and then I were to get a cold/flu again, would anything else take the infection??? IE what else will hurt if the Tonsils are gone.

Thanks

If your tonsils are taken out, your body will still be able to fight off infections. Many have had their tonsils removed. You simple won't get a sore throat anymore (in a few cases you get sore throats after the tonsils are out, but not many).

Try using a humidifyer in your bedroom. That way you have moisture in the air and your throat won't dry out as much. The dryer the throat becomes the more it will hurt.

Drinking more water should help also

Zinc lozengers will help a sore throat too!

Kewl,... thanks Doc,... sorry, haven't had time to login for a few days,...

So basically if I do get the them taken out,.. instead of it getting swollen when I get sick, I'll get like a fever or aches and pains?

Oh and I tried those Zinc things,... I hate them! Rather do the halls thing

Anyway thanks again!

This one required some thought. Some how your intestines and or colon is affected because you're doing these sit-ups right before going to bed. It's not good to exercise right before going to bed. A few hours before, but not right before.

How long has this been going on?

Has this problem been relieved by a bowel movement and or passing gas?

How much do you work out a day?

Eat some high fiber foods and as you increase the fiber, increase liquid (water) intake as well.

Try to gradually do your sit-ups earlier in the evening and not right before you go to bed.

If this problem gets worse go see your Doctor, because that's not normal.
