Looking for aftermarket Rods and Pistons

4117 Views 54 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  UFB
Does anyone know of a company that makes rods and pistons for the 1.5 SOHC alpha motor. Or will I have to get more custom work done? I am building my bottom end for turbo.

As usual, JE comes out way more expensive than everyone else.

Ross = $550 for pistons, rings, pins and spiralocks in whatever compression you want -- from 9:1 to 7.5:1

Crower = $675 for the rods INCLUDING shipping.

JE can bite me, expensive pricks.

Didnt you say that if you purchase the Ross Pistons you would have to buy rods to accomidate the new Pistons?

Cant you just purchase the Ross Pistons and use the stock rods?

This sounds like a dumb question but is it possible to shave your cylinder head a bit.Lets say 5 thou or a little higher.What compression ratio are we then looking at with the Pistons which are offered by UFB?
Personally i want to run approx a 9:1 Compression ratio because im not going higher than 10PSI,Plus like Cheuk says you can run 15PSi on 9:1Pistons
So what im trying to say is if i get these Pistons and Shave the cylinder head SLIGHTLY would this be a good way to raise the compression to 9:1 SAFELY!!

When you say these Pistons are good untill 300HP is that at the Wheels?

This is really confuseing<img src=/images/forums/snitz/uhh.gif width=15 height=15 border=0><img src=/images/forums/snitz/uhh.gif width=15 height=15 border=0>

The reason why im saying that the Pistons are a little too low for my application is because Random had the same compression in his Alpine Kit and had said to loose in bottom end Torque.Remember im only talking about low boost.Well if you guys say 8.2:1 Pistons on low boost cars between 7-10PSi is Safe and fine then this is the route i will take.Thank you very much<img src=/images/forums/snitz/approve.gif width=15 height=15 border=0><img src=/images/forums/snitz/approve.gif width=15 height=15 border=0><img src=/images/forums/snitz/approve.gif width=15 height=15 border=0><img src=/images/forums/snitz/approve.gif width=15 height=15 border=0>

UFB thanks for your help!!
Now since your stating that your 8.2:1 Pistons will be safer and by running 10PSI i will be ok and not loose any bottom end Torque.
Your saying with the stock Pistons you shouldnt go any higher than 7PSI to be SAFE.That's fine but if i get 8.2:1 Pistons and run 10PSI max(which is my goal)then im not gaining any more POWER and is just as safe as if i was to run 7PSI with stock Pistons.
I understand that your going to say that if i want to run higher boost than 7PSI i will then not be able to raise any higher cause my Pistons will not handle the power.
Thats fine but after 10PSI the stock ECU is basically worthless unless you running a reprogrammed Uni-chip or stand alone unit.My S-AFC will not be benefical passed this point
Im not trying to say anything bad about you.i appreciate all the help you have given me but was thinking this would be the same.
What do you think<img src=/images/forums/snitz/thumbup.gif width=25 height=18 border=0><img src=/images/forums/snitz/thumbup.gif width=25 height=18 border=0>

UFB!!
I thought that if i was to run 7PSI on Stock compression which is 10:1 with my tibby because i have a 1.8L,would be the same power as of 10PSI on lower compression.
I figured this because of the stock HIGH compression it comes with.My bad SORRY!!<img src=/images/forums/snitz/smile.gif width=15 height=15 border=0><img src=/images/forums/snitz/smile.gif width=15 height=15 border=0>
Now if this is the case i will be shopping for some form of STAND ALONE MANAGEMENT system cause my S-AFC is worthless at this point.
UFB!!
I was reading the link you had on the management systems which you offe and was pretty impressed with the results.
Is it just as good as a Haltech? If so and its cheaper ill consider.
Or is their someone that sells them pretty cheap

Random!!
Thanks for the input,but im staying at 7PSi on stock compression and internals.I should be OK at this level.If i was to run higher thn 7PSi than i will consider lower compression Pistons.
Also wouldnt over bore Pistons be better than drop in Pistons,since are motors are used.Drop in Pistons are better for new motors

<hr width=60% noshade size=1 align=left>
I have my S-AFC with 440cc High Ohm injectors which should be ok for low boost applications.
A couple of people which are running 8 psi on stock internals seem to be fine.Onpool was running 10PSI on stock internals
<img src=/images/forums/snitz/smile.gif width=15 height=15 border=0><img src=/images/forums/snitz/smile.gif width=15 height=15 border=0><img src=/images/forums/snitz/smile.gif width=15 height=15 border=0><img src=/images/forums/snitz/smile.gif width=15 height=15 border=0>
I also have a MSN Ignition which should be good to retard the Timing.
Im thinking 2-3 degrees for every pound of Boost.
Im estimating but only on the Dyno you can tell!

<hr width=60% noshade size=1 align=left>
4Door!!
You have a point its better to be safe than sorry.Like i said i will consider the Pistons you sell
BTW,I was wondering if you can get 1.8L Pistons cause im not running a 2.0L
If its not possible i will then be forced to get a 2.0L block from the scrap yard

<hr width=60% noshade size=1 align=left>
<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>
Is there a different in the 1.8 blocks and the 2.0 blocks and if so wich one is stronger for a good turbo build up.And are the heads the same?

<hr width=60% noshade size=1 align=left>
<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote>
The 1.8 and 2.0L Blocks are identical as well as the Cylinder Head!!
The only difference is that the 2.0L has a longer stroke tahn the 1.8L.This also means the crank is also different<img src=/images/forums/snitz/thumbup.gif width=25 height=18 border=0><img src=/images/forums/snitz/thumbup.gif width=25 height=18 border=0><img src=/images/forums/snitz/thumbup.gif width=25 height=18 border=0><img src=/images/forums/snitz/thumbup.gif width=25 height=18 border=0><img src=/images/forums/snitz/thumbup.gif width=25 height=18 border=0>
