SUBJECT: TIMING BELT NOISE - FRONT CASE MISMACHINED
The following information applies to 1999-2000 Elantras/Tiburons produced up to 9/22/99. A TSB will soon be issued.
DESCRIPTION
On some 1999-2000 Elantras/Tiburons produced before Sept. 22, 1999, customers may complain of an unusual noise at the front of the engine. The cause of the noise may be the timing belt rubbing against the front dust covers. You may see a frayed or shredded front edge of the timing belt. This condition can be caused by a mismachined front case (P/N 21310-23002), and is most likely to occurr at a very low mileage.
SERVICE INFORMATION
Verify the noise condition by removing the Timing Belt Upper Cover Assembly and inspecting the front edge of the timing belt for fraying or shredding, and the backside of the upper cover for evidence of rubbing.
If either of these conditions exist, replace the front case (P/N 21310-23002), idler pulley (P/N 24810-23011), timing belt (P/N 24312-23201) and any other confirmed damaged parts. Front case assemblies produced before 9/22/99 may have a mismachined idler pulley mounting surface that is not parallel with the front face of the cylinder block. This can cause the timing belt to "walk off" the gears and into the front dust covers.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Normal warranty operation codes and times apply.
