Mobile 1 Tri-Synthetic

I feel a difference every time I change the oil. I use Casterol and have been using it since the first oil change. It may just be because the clean oil.

It seemed to me that the engine works smoother since I switched to synthetic. Before I switched running to work @ 70 the car was at 3200 RPM, after I switched same run @ 70 car is at 2700 RPM. It might be my imagination, but it works for me...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

There is no way oil can make you rev lower @ the same speed, if this was after time your motor has broken in and settled, Yes synth oil is good but nothing beats frequent oil changes, when oil gets dirty it gets thicker and heavier, when you change it your motor runs beter till it gets dirty again. Synth is not good for hot weather areas since it is more "slipery" then regular oil it leaks out and blows out faster, frequent oil changes guys, also if you run the motor hard you may want thicker oil ( 10-40, 15-40 turbo grade ) hell I throw a bit of 20-50 in it to give it some "body" once in a while. Just change the oil every 3000 miles and you'll be happy ( or when it turns black which ever comes first )

I've had the best luck with Amsoil synthetic oil. They market extended drain intervals and bypass filters, as well as the regular filters.

I ran it in my 85 Audi for 7 years and never had to touch the engine (the lobes on the cam had no wear on them at all).

I converted my 2000 Accent over after 8000 miles and have been running it ever since.

Brendan: Good to know about sythetic oil in hot areas (I live in Phoenix). Is heavier or lighter oil better in a hot climate? I'm nearing an oil change (on both Tibs) and want to select the best oil for my 100F+ weather <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Mobile 1 is a good oil, and I don't have any problems with it, but I put my money in Castrol Syntec, Porsche, BMW and all the other high class (high cost <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>) automakers can't be wrong about EVERYTHING. <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

Hotter means you should use a little more heavy oil, if you use 10w30, go to 10w40, when it really gets hot 100+ degrees, go up a little more, like 10w50. But this all really depends on you, the way you drive (how hard) and the distance you go, and the amount of sitting at stop lights etc... 10w40 should do you fine where you are thou, so good luck, and I hope this helps...

I was a Mobil 1 user, but recently switched to Amsoil. In wear test data from Amsoil, Mobil 1 was repeatedly one of the worst. Amsoil was of course the best, but I've heard this from many people before, so I'm giving it a try. Good to have a 5 yr warranty, just in case<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

actually, u might be better off with AMsoil. I know a person who use it and been using it on his 94 Probe GT with 167,000 miles on it, and runs STRONG, blowing no smoke, absoltely in perfect condition. i believe it's somewhere around $7 per quart.
If you are planning to keep your car, then I would advise you to use Amsoil.

Keep in mind that even though it is 7$ per quart, it is still more economical (and more convenient) to run than regular oil due to the extended drain intervals.

Thanks BraveheartII. I run my car pretty hard (too many pretty boys in Honduhs to take care of <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> ). My wife doesn't run it as hard. What are the disadvantages of a heavy oil if it's not run so hard?

So I should probably go with 10w50 in my car in the summer. 10w40 in both the rest of the year? (It doesn't get below 32F in the winter, and that only in the middle of the night)

No Prob dude, glad to help, and as for the heavy oil and not driving as hard, you will be fine in that heat, but if you where in a colder area you would have the problem of oil starvation to the upper parts of the engine (i.e. cams, valve train, etc.). Heavy oils do a strange thing when they are cold... at the pick-up tube in the oil pan they will cause an air "bubble" to form because it is easier to suck air through the oil and into the pick-up than the heavy oil itself, I guess a good example is when you are trying to suck up a cold slushie through a straw, what happens? You suck more air than slushie, right? Same thing... Just be sure to let the engine warm up before you do any hard accel or cornering, give the oil a chance to flow properly... and yes, 10w40 should do you fine in that temp also, but the warm-up still applies, okay? I run 15w-50 (since before the turbo) and I use Mobil 1. at $7 a quart, I just can't justify Amsoil or Redline as long as you change it every 3000 miles. I also use the K&N oil filter rather than the crappy OEM unit.

If you run a heavier weight oil, make sure you let your car warm up a tad before taking off, and don't drive hard untill the engine temp needle is at least halfway to it's normal position.

Leave it to Random to Needlessly complicate things.

In truth dude, if ya use synth oil, then you should only change every 5000 miles, not 3000, they say 7000-7500 if you use synth, but I go for the middle ground, 5000 is a good round number of miles, and the synth oil is still going strong. Even at 5000 miles I still change oil every month thou, got a long way to drive every day!

BTW... I'm not saying it is bad to change every 3000, it's just cheaper and just as safe at 5000, just making sure you didn't think I was telling you that you where in the wrong! <img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>
