Well, add me to the list.
On my way to work today, something broke in the tranny.
I was accelerating, and trying to shift into 3rd gear. The clutch was floored, and it wouldn't go in. So of course i tried to force in (usually works). I hear this little *thunk* and next thing i know i get a nasty ass grinding sounds, no pressure on the clutch pedal, and the inablilty to get into gear.
After getting towed by Roadside assistance (thank you Mr. Mitchel, if you read the forums), i got to Pacifico Hyundai in SW philly. They were busy as sin, but in 30 minutes, my baby was up on the lift, and thanks to the extended protection plan, i'm getting reimbursed for the rental car.
Well, they dropped the tranny, and took out the clutch. Half of the disc was BARE METAL. My clutch was gone. The missing half spread through the bell housing. Mind you this is a 2001 Accent GS 1.6L DOHC (5spd obviously), with 20,433 miles on it, so this is odd... They are going to tear down the tranny and try to figure out why it did this. All under warranty. They also said that this is the first time they have seen this. They also said that they wouldn't replace it with an aftermarket clutch (had to at least try!).
SO, a warning to all peeps with the 1.6L accent that seems to have a weak clutch, and a hard time shifting, be wary. I had noticed that a week before that the clutch wasn't keeping grabbing at higher rpm's (evidenced by that lovely *crunch* when shifting fast), but i had assumed that I had just lifted too early. Right before it broke, i noticed it wasn't because I lifted to early. Too little too late i guess.
On a side note, the people at Pacifico are GREAT. They gave me a little grief for the intake (but not for the tranny, the car was idling kinda rough; they said they will put a stock one on for me and see if the aftermarket unit was causing it and would try to fix it if the aftermarket intake wasn't the cause (heh, free ecu tuning ).
They also seemed interested in tuning hyundai's! I gave the service manager KORE's information (i had an old business card of theirs, and wrote the new site on the back). I also told them about hyundaiperformance.com thanks to the complete turbo kit offered there. I ALSO suggested that they tell the customers about Hyundai's webtech service, the ease of accent engine swaps, the interchangability of the beta cams, mentioned Red's tibby project, mentioned SR, and told about the growing group of hyundai tuners.
They seem interested/amazed. They are now my dealer, for all intents and purposes, and I HIGHLY recomend them. They seem to be cool about mods, and they even asked me to come back as my lil project progressed! I think that this dealer may be willing to offer performance packages with the cars, if I work on them a little...
Not bad for a day's work.
