I bought a 2001 elantra and was never told that to keep my warranty I have to take my car to the dealership every so many miles for regular maintenance! At 7500 miles it is going to cost me $69 for a tire rotation and oil change. I can do that **** myself for less than $15!!!! It only gets worse from there, at 15,000 it will cost me over $200 for the regular checkup. At 60,000 it is going to be close to $1000 for the checkup. Now I have bought cars before and never ever had to pay the dealership for checkups, I did them myself! When I bought the car I asked the saleman what the checkups were all about and he said "Oh they are no big deal, $20 a piece". If I would have known I never would have bought the car!!! The worst part is the dealer is close to 50 miles away and I could have bought the car from a dealer that was much closer. I am pissed and just wondering if anyone else ran into this problem?

Thats one of the drawbacks of having a warranty like that HOWEVER if you keep reciepts, such as having it done else where that is cheaper (i.e. oil changes, etc.) you should be ok. Such things as rotating the tires, that shouldn't be a problem if you do it yourself, so you probably can get away without the first checkout by changing your own oil. I feel the same way cause I am a "do it yourselfer". But as cars get more advanced, its harder to work on them. A computer does half the work, the mechanic does the other half...lol

Now, you don't have to get the service/warranty work done at the dealer where you bought it from. You can get it done at any Hyundai dealer. I purchased mine about 1 hr away from my house, but I found another dealer closer, so I had them transfer my papers and information to the one that is closer.

It's the same with all new cars for the warranty. This isn't something exclusive to Hyundai. I had to on my Dodge Neon and on my Pontiac Sunfire. You don't have to have it done at the dealer. Heck if you keep the receipts for your oil and filters you can do it yourself.

Yeah, whatever you do...Keep the reciepts no matter what. Thats your proof if something breaks and they point the finger at you not doing your part with the maintance.

you can do the oil changes yourself but like everyone else said keep the rec. Also if you read your manual and the warranty manual you might learn something. Its all laid out there, if you have a question just call the dealer. I was really close to my 7,500 miles and i called and asked about that and they said i just have to have it done and keep the rec. the only ones that you have to go to the dealer for is the 15,000 and thats only $150.00. Also read about the oil changes and all that, because if its summer time or a certain percentage of driving done in the city then you have to get your oil changed at the 3,000 mark. I still get most of my work done at the dealer the 7,500 is only like 15 bucks for me. and at 3,000 I go to jiffy lube and get the oil changed then. Good luck with your car and it will last a long time if you take care of it like the manual says too.

Hah hah! My dealer is kick ass. He said all I had to do was have it regularly maintained, by myself or anyone else and write it down in the maintenance log and my warranty will be okay. I don't know why your dealers told you you had to get it serviced with them. He said I didn't even need to keep the receipts. But I am going to anyways, just to make sure there isn't any conflict if something happens.

I personally hate going to the dealer. I always feel like they want to rip me off or find something to void the warranty for. When I got my Intrax springs I found out that my shocks were blown.. The car only had 15000 miles on it!!! I took it to the dealer and they said that nothing was wrong. They admitted there was oil like the shox were blown then they said it was from a road. I asked them if they even took the shocks out to check and they didn't. I dont like the dealer, but thats just my opinion.

I have a 2001 Elantra GT and a 2000 Accent GLS. When the water pump went on my accent, the part was free.. of course because of warranty, but the labor, because the car had 35,000 miles, was over 600! I told them that I refused to pay that much, so I talked them down to $450.. Man that is still a lot of money! I would have just bought the part myself and put it in myself if I knew it was going to cost even near that amount of money.

Actually I have seen where they offered free oil chainges for the duration of the warrany. This ensures that you get the work done.

To clarify they can NOT insist that you get the work done at the dealership. This would be criminal cause they could then charge whatever they want for labor. The only thing they can do is insist that you do get the work done. To avoid any problems you should keep all records. If you do the work yourself then keep the receipts and a log book showing that you did the work and the mileage on the car at the time. This will also help in the resale of your car especially if you sell the car yourself.

Yes, those are my sentiments and experience. As long as you keep receipts and perfomr the scheduled maintenance acccording to the factory, you'll be fine. Just watch the dealers and their little money-makers. Good luck everyone! Hyundai!

I'm overdue for my 15,000, but I really don't mind getting this done at the dealer. My car has had a very low cost of ownership even with paying dealer maintenance.

To keep oil change costs down, I bring in my own oil and filter. It's only around $10 for labor. I buy Hyundai filters from the parts dept, and I get a discount when buying 3 or more.

I can always find someplace that will do the oilchange parts and labor for $15

Oil and filter would run about $10 from a parts store so for $5 more I get someone else to get dirty. It is just not worth my time.
