I have 350 surprisingly trouble-free (hehe) miles on my '02 Elantra GT. In the old days, they told you to change the oil at 500 miles to get rid of any shavings, etc. If I read it right, my cars manual says that I don't need to change until 7,500. Would it be worth it to change the oil sooner?<img src=/images/forums/snitz/uhh.gif width=15 height=15 border=0>

Yup, my dealer changed mine free at 1000klm for the very reason you mentioned, small particles of metal from the new engine running in. So yeah, change it about 500-600 miles.

I reccomend a change at 500 total miles
1500 miles and 3000 miles.

That's 3 oil and filter changes in the first 3000 miles. It will ensure a nice easy, clean break in for the motor, and make sure all metal bits are out of the motor.

I also run a powerful 4 magnet rubber strap on my oil filter to grab any metalic particles running in the oil stream, and I also use a magnetic drain plug.

Even after 40000 miles, there are still little metal bits on the end of the magnet at every oil change, and I change my oil every 3000, and I replaced my oil pan at 20,000 (long story, but just proving it was/is not metal shavings hanging out in the pan attaching to my drain plug magnet.)

I also was suprised with how long the factory service intervial was.
I changed my oil at every 2500km up to 10 000km and now i use Mobil 1 oil - which i am happy with.
Random is right in regards to metal shavings. I have looked at my oil and you do notice very very small metal bits. Even after all my oil changes there are still little bits in the oil.
An oil and filter change is cheap and should be done regularly.
