just pulled filter off to clean it and oil started dripping out. mechanic says its no big deal, i'm thinking those guys got some bad info, am i wrong?

I believe it's called "blow by" basicly oil sneeks past the rings into the valve cover then through the hose from the valve cover to the intake plumbing. You usualy see it on cars with high miles or that are boosted.
Not a real big deal just check your oil pereodically.

Other way around, it's pressure seeping past the rings in to the crankcase causing pressure to build in your valve cover (through the PCV system) and spit some oil out. Not a big deal at all, it's normal for some oil to be in there.
