I think if the car is in overdrive the output shaft is spinning faster than the input shaft.

It doesn't allow the car to shift into 4th gear with it turned off, I believe. People say it makes it go faster because you can really wind out 4th gear to the limit and then shift. So I assume..... Then again I could be wrong. I don't own a car equipped with an automatic transmission, so perhaps someone who does can clarify that up

I got a auto Tibb and I always have mine on even if I'm racing someone. You usally want it on when you're driving on the highway so you get good milage. You won't get anymore power if you have it off unless you're way up there in the RPM's

The o/d is your fourth gear. On the highway you want it on cause it will give better millage. It is just like on a standard except of 5 gears there are 4. you do get more power cause when you are going with it off you are in a lower gear, thus, keeping the revs higher.

On the highway it is best you keep it on, unless you want that boost to pass you can turn it off ( just like downshifting in a manual )
In the city i find it better to keep it off, for better pick up and also when you come to a stop the revs are higher so the engine does some of the stopping, this way you save a bit on your breaks. ( just like downshifting when coming to a stop in a manual)

Hope this helps

I did a little testing, you don't really gain anything by having it off because it automatically turns off when you stop, or hammer the throttle enough to make the tranny downshift, and then turns back on when you resume normal driving.

try this, while driving with O/D on, floor it, you'll notice the down-shift, then let off, you'll notice it up-shift twice, once to get back in the gear it was in, then again to get back into overdrive
