just working on getting the engine/tranny out of my excel, and we've got everything figured out... aside from the axles.

I have no experience whatsoever with disconnecting axles, and my friend is only familiar with old muscle cars.

I figured before we attempt anything, I'd ask here.


Are there any special tools I'll need at all to disconnect the axles at the transmission? Does anybody have any information AT ALL about the axles on an X2 Excel?

gently pry using a wide flathead screwdriver (or prybar) between the inner CV's & the tranny case while pulling outward. but don't tug on the whole axle, pull it by the inner CV body. they come out pretty easily and don't require much muscle.

popping them back into the tranny is the real PITA.

yeah, basically remove the bolt from the hub, loosen the control arm to have room to slide it out, then use a prybar. Kill the tranny casing if you have to... mind you, I don't know if you can re-use automatic axles where a manual will go, but if you have to, you can adapt the CV shafts to other rods if the bearing assembly is the same on both CV shafts. I had to combine a 92 and a 93 sentra CV shafts (they had different splines despite both being automatic) You can separate teh bearing from the rod by simply removing the CV boot clip, then sliding the bearing ass'y off the shaft. Then mix and match till u get one of the proper length.

another option is to unbolt the balljoint from the arm & also the lower strut nuts/bolts. the knuckle can then be tied or wired aside & there's enough room to do your thing.

yeah maybe in some cases, however the only two times I ever had to do it (1987 Escort, 1993 Sentra) I had to separate the spindle ass'y from the lower control arm by way of ball joint. Not pleasant.

with everything off they are held in the transmission by a epanding snap ring , give it a good jerk and it will pop out of the tranny ... however ,if you are not worried about breaking things when you lift the motor out they will "pop" out on their own , not a safe thing to do but when you lift everythign jsut give the motor and tranny a jiggle and one at a time they wil come out lol
or you can cut them out with a torch :evil:
