Rough 3rd gear

1197 Views 11 Replies 6 Participants Last post by nyne
Hi, I drive a 2001 Tiburon, with about 4500 miles on it, and when i shift to 3rd gear, when im going a bit higher on RPM's than the hyundai manual suggests, its a bit of a rough transition. It was the same before i put in a short shifter, but when i drive, well.... the speed limit, this problem goes away, smooth shift... The only performance mods i have are 17" konig traffik wheels, and falken ziex 502' tires.. 205/140/17, CAI, exhaust, lowering springs, & rear strut bar.. I don't think any of this has any effect on this sloppy.. almost scratchy 3rd gear transition... Anyone have any ideas on what this is, and how i could fix it?

Check your fluid levels in the transmission first. The fluid will play a huge part in how easily the transmission will shift.

Sounds like your 2nd to 3rd gear synchro isn't spinning up fast enough...which is why is shifts fine if you accelerate slowly. I would take it to the dealer, you may need your synchro replaced, it seems to be a common problem on these cars.

Just don't let them blame it on the short shifter.

alright, I'll definatly look into that, the people at the dealership didn't seem to frown on modifications and so forth when i was buying the car, but we'll see how they are when i take it in to get looked at... I have about 3 weeks vacation from college, so i'll be driving my old car (86 volvo 240 gl ) for a while unless they actually supply a rental car.... if they bring up the short shifter supposedly voiding my warrenty, i'll have to call my lawyer, im not getting jerked around by car salesmen and/or the dealership. thanks for the advice.

went to the dealership today... left the car there for about 3-4 hours... then i was called.. that they ordered my 'part' and that it wont be in for a week, so i could pick up my car.... when i got back to the dealership.. i was told the 'part' was a new transmission... wtf?!? it is covered under warrenty.... so im cool with it.. they better hook up a rental or a loaner during the 2 days it takes to swap the tranny's.... ah well... problem fixed apparantly... i have a week to really break the tranny j/k

whoa.. that surprises me for 2 reasons. 1 that your tranny faultered after that little use (must be manufacturer defect) and 2, that hyundai was so quick to replace it. I would have thought that they would first try to blame it on your mods in some obscure way like they do to so many people on these boards. Just surprised and pleased to see that they would take the time and effort to fix the problem the first time around.

That is one of my major concern as far as installing any kinds of mods, the warranty, but from what i've seen and heard, most of the dealers have had no problems in fixing the cars, which is great news to us but I guess it depends on the relation ship with your dealer and sales person also .

You should tell your dealer to fix it faster. Once they receive the tranny, it only takes about 3 hours to swap it.

no kidding 3 hours? yeah i was wondering about that myself... a friend of mine works on a lot of small block chevy's... and he said 2 days for a tranny swap? wtf? ah well though, as long as i have something to drive, at their expense im not too concerned. i asked them about 1.8L camshafts, but i had heard that the performance gain isn't even noticable? would it be much of a gain, or should i just go with performance cam shafts?

I've heard the 1.8 gain is around 5HP...so it would be noticeable on the track, daily driving, maybe not.

I can notice it all around. It seems to kick in at 3k.
Maybe adds more torque than hp.

cool, cool.... ECU would be cool also. i guess the only thing stopping me.. is lack of motivation based on the warrenty being held in the balance between performance, and well.. the warrenty.... im wanting to hook up that alpine turbo charger, possibly supercharger im not sure yet, cam, ect.. i've even seen a quad throttle body for a tiburon, anyone have any info on that?
(sorry my posts seem to drift... its almost 3am, theres my excuse lol)
