JUst wondering...I know the basics of overdrive vs it off...basically overdrive is more fuel efficient and doesnt rev at as high rpms...and O/D off it revs higher? I was just wondering if everyone usually just drives with it on or what. You get more passing power with it turned off right?
Just the gm cars i had I only used overdrive on the highway and I heard something that its better on the engine to leave the overdrive on in the trib....anyone clear this up for me...Its freakin hot out and my minds a lil woozy here!

You are correct about the passing power. At least that's what the salesman told me. I have also noticed that there seems to be a littl bit more "go" power with overdrive off.

Leaving the overdrive on causes a little bit more wear on the engine than having it on, but it ain't much. I to have notice a little power gain but I think that it is because it revs higherthan having it on.

Yeah thats what I meant, it was a long day that day.

Having the overdrive off is good untill you get to 60-70 then you need to turn it on to get to the next gear or you won't go anywhere and you'll ruin something you don't want to ruin

I concur with the rest. The O/D button only comes into play with my Tib when I want to pass very fast, pull away from someone or just want to smoke the Civic siiting next to me (which I did just a couple days ago). The O/D is the equivilent of down shifting to a lower gear!

Ummmm not trying to bash or anything...but how can o/d be a third gear when the car is a 4 speed automatic? Hehehe...

Hey, anyone in here who has an auto, when you're going at about 60mph, what're your rpms when you've got over drive on? I have the 5 speed and at 60 i'm already at 3000!!!

Overdrive really doesnt do too much while driving around town, but the reason they have it is so you can cruise at 65 and not be in the 4000 rpm range like with 3 speed, non overdrive trans's. Having overdrive on increases engine life by making it rotate less at the same vehicle speeds. Overdrive on is also alot better on gas mileage on highways.

I had an automatic and overdrive is 4th gear basically. Turning it off knocks you down into 3rd. common sense tells you that since 2 and low are already on the shifter. Also these civics your racing with your autos, I hope their autos also cause a 5 speed would beat you. No automatic will beat a 5 speed in a quater mile unless you have alot of horsepower. Thats why I traded mine in for the 5 speed, now I kick ass! even with a hedder, intake and high performance exhaust, I still got klled by 5 speed civics, miatas,ect...

Actually man...I beat a 5 speed Honda Civic DX (Or EX or whatever the hell it was...I don't believe that there is an HP change). Trust me...autos can beat 5 speeds...
