Florida man, allegedly drag racing, hits another car with his own mother in it; she dies
The Associated Press
DONA VISTA, Fla. (AP) A man who was allegedly drag racing hit a car driven by his own mother, killing her and another passenger. Though injured himself, Dwight Samples, 21, asked emergency workers Wednesday to tend to his mother after he realized it was her car he had struck, witnesses said.
Police said he was driving his late model Ford Mustang with a powerful 5-liter engine Wednesday on a two-lane state road when he rear-ended his mother's car. Witnesses said he appeared to be drag racing with another car, which was not involved in the accident. He was believed to be going 100 to 120 mph.
His mother, Diane Samples, and a passenger in her car, Vivian Green, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The son was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center with deep head wounds, said Lt. Tommy Carpenter, spokesman for Lake County Fire and Rescue. He was in stable condition early Thursday.
His head went through the Mustang's windshield and the steering wheel was crushed into the dashboard.
