What would the difference be if i were to just cut the stock shifter or if I bought a short shifter? And if i were to just umm....trim the stock shifter how far would i have to go with it?

What makes a short shifter a short shifter is not just the distance from the top to the pivot but the pivot to the bottom. Just cutting the top down will only make it look like a short shifter but not realy give you quicker gear changes. It may even actually make it a lil tougher to shift into gears.

HVe sells short shifters with a core charge, forget how much, but you can e-mail SharkRacing to see how much they can get it for, they distribute HVe.

Actually, and i don't wanna sound like an Uncle Ben's comercial, but if you take about 1 inch off your shifter and re thread it to accept the shiftknob, it will act like a shortshifter. It worked in my friends honda, but idk if it would work to well with our lovely hyundai trannys.

Actually that doesn't provide a "true" shorter shift. A real short shifter will redo the physics under the pivot point, making the length between the bottom of the shifter and the pivot longer, therefore shortening the throw on top. It's basic physics.

Ok, you have a point, but use those same physics and imagine a lever 4 ft long. Now that lever's movement will be, lets say, 8ft. Take a foot off the lever's length, and the length of its movement will be less, yes or no?

If it is that easy then why don't you just grab the shifter a lil bit lower?

If you realy want to improve shifting times you will need to purchase a short shifter. If you just want it to look like you have a short shifter then cut your stock one.

Since you are in the US, you can get the HVE unit through Phantom Racing. I like mine, and have had it in the car for 3 years now. Depending on how quick you want it, HySpeed should have one available soon. It will be a new unit, not re-manufactured like the HVE one.

I agree, cutting the top off your stock shifter does little for reducing throw. Measure your throw (say 3rd to 4th), and the lever length from the top of the knob TO THE PIVOT. Draw it out on paper, and then draw the throw 1 or 2" lower. You will see that there won't be a huge benefit, and your lever will further AWAY from you. The HVE unit is designed so that 6'+ guys like me don't have to reach to get the shifter once it gets modified.

if uve got an accent from 95-99 i kno the stock tib/elantra shifter lever bolts in with little to no modification (so ive been told and so ive seen pics) i've been looking in junkyards for that and a beta tb, but then decided id ask the dealer. hopefully tomorro ill be picking up my tib shifter lever, bolt nut and washer for like $20 bucks the bolt itself is like $5! the washer- .50, and the same with the nut, so thats $6, then the lever itself is only like $14.95 at least thats what the lady quoted me when she was ordering it, and i even said wow that seems cheap! and she said yea i was surprised too... hm, but we'll see. the tb is like $210 tho or more i found a junkyard with late hyundais, but they have two complete beta's for $500... but no just tb's... anyone on here with a beta that got a bbtb, or knows anyone who did, let me kno ill buy ur stock one!

TECHNICALLY... the short shifter should be longer below the pivot point AND shorter above it. if u cut the top, the movement u will have to make with ur hand WILL BE LESS. its like shortening the radius of a circle..the circle is smaller (the shifter is ur radius, and it like movine forward or back say a fraction of a whole circle of motion) ah u prolly don't understand that but oh well.... the thing about a 4ft shifter vs and 8ft shifter is correct. its just if u cut ur shifter off..sometimes its too low to be easy to reach, and u hae to cut TOO lo to get the same effect as haveing it longer on the bottom. but if u have a short shifter thats JUST longer on the botto but still stock height, ya ull save some motion, but couple that with like 2 inches shorter on the top, and ull REALLY have short shifts can only move the linkange coupling point down so far... and u can only cut ur shifter down so short... like most short shifters are say... 1 foot long total, same length as stock, just the bottom is longer and the top is shorter so the pivot point is higher.
