hey you handy builders, i looked into making a custom CAI for my '99 GLS, but i swear it would be pointless (i'm starting to be pessimistic on this here website). there is no where to route the tubing to get cold air outside the engine bay. besides, there is that silly air sensor right in the middle of the stock intake that has to be included. in my opinion, replacing the the rubber intake for a metal tube isn't going to make that much difference if the length and diameter stay the same (aside from air friction). anyway you fit it, the aftermarket filter would have to sit exactly where the stock filter is, and the custom tube would have to be split in half to compensate for the sensor. does anyone have any idea what i'm talking about? any suggestions?

I know it doesn't look like a big deal that setup, but it makes a big difference. Passing power was increased dramatically, noise was up a bit too, but my Service manager took it for a spin and said it was noticablly quicker.

hey thanks for the pics smiley. that's an interesting set up (especially the two NOS lines!) is your filter just hanging loose, or is it braced underneath? also, that looks like a custom job. where did you get the tubing? in any respect, you have my respect, and maybe i'll try it on my baby when the warranty goes south. hey, are you abandoning the sonata for the new tiburon? just kidding. do what you gotta do. i think i'll wait for the RX-8

never mind about the filter brace. i see the little thingmabob holding it in place. i thought of more questions: what angle degree bend is in the tube connecting to the throttle body? is that 3" tubing? how do you think you CAI holds up against the heat from the engine? i know the entire engine bay gets blazing hot. enough questions. thanks.

you have a different engine. starting in '99 the sonata became "new and improved." but if you ask me, it's still ___________ (fill in the blank). from what i have read, your generation sonata had a larger 3.0 L engine versus the 2.5 L that you see pictured here. either way, you have to build your own CAI out of hardware materials.

yes, it looks like a "Warm" air induction but smiley swears that it works. i haven't had the opportunity to try it yet so i can't say anything. maybe in the summer.

MMM nope. Model breakdown(to my knowledge) is as follows:

Base-4cyl
GL-4cyl/6cyl(option)
GLS-6cyl

Hope this helps somewhat!<img src=/images/forums/snitz/thumbup.gif width=25 height=18 border=0>

Us who own the 1998 and earlier Sonata's make use of the older Mitsubishi supplied engines (as to my knowledge).

Question - can we fit a custom air box in our car? I know that the air flow sensor is PART of the air box cover. It's not possible to jury rig that to the air tube in a cold air intake is it?

<hr width=60% noshade size=1 align=left>And ANOTHER thing... Why can't I get no Tang 'round here?

Beenpit, unfortunately the 95 sonata has the air bag sensor on the air filter side of the car, it is about where the small air dam hole is on the left side of the car when you look at the bumper. I wouldn't cut a hole in the wheel arch as that's an invitation for festy dirty and water. Best results for you on the n/a motor is to remove the box resonator which is along your piping, and remove the large plastic intake that sits above the radiator. by doing these mods i was able to do 16.2 1/4 with cat back exhaust.
