ok, what is it called when you don't use the clutch to shift and what is it called when you keep the gas floored and keep going through gears chirping the tires every shift?

LMAO!!! You beet me to it Rob.
You have to use you clutch. Just read the text that was posted. I believe this is what you are talking about and just getting it confused. This is the fastest way to shift through gears and is the best text I have ever seen on this subject. I would consider this the shifting "bible".

I thought that you could shift without using the clutch? My cousin does it some times when he's feeling lazy. Something like matching the engine rpm's or something.

I guess it comes down to experience and knowing your car. But who am I to say so... I drive an auto. hehe

You can shift without using your clutch, but it's not recommended, and DEFINITELY not while racing.

Yup, in racing there are no shortcuts if you want to make the fewest mistakes as possible. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Anyone who shifts without using the clutch is just completely retarded and can't drive stick. If you want to shift without the clutch, you should have bought an automatic! Or get one of those cars equipped with the autoshift transmission. If you shift without the clutch, you grind your gears down to pretty much nothing then the car will stop moving. also, you can burn up the clutch with chirping the tires in every gear. DOING THIS WILL COST A LOT OF $$$$$$$ and is just plain STUPID! Anyone who does this doesn't know crap about cars and should be driving an automatic ford taurus with hubcaps!

cougart...that around here is known as
"power shifting." Flooring the gas, then letting up very quickly to shift, slamming it into gear and then slamming on the gas all the way again. This puts a lot of strain on the clutch and I dont recommend it unless you have a high performance clutch that is meant for racing and shifting like that.

I eat Honda Civics for breakfast, Toyota Corollas for lunch, and Volkswagen Jettas for dinner

Hey jrh382, my cousin does it sometimes. I was in the car once when he did it and there was no problem at all... of course it wasn't a N to 1 shift. The shift was really smooth and I don't think he would shift like that if it would be wrecking his car.

He knows a lot about cars and he has both his racing licence and his rally licence so he knows about racing and cars.

The clutch is there for a reason and yes, you're supposed to use it. If you do it correctly you don't always have to use your clutch, but it's there for a purpose and you should use it.

i know how to shift like the racers do using the heel toe method, i just wanted to know what the term "speed shifting" meant, i heard it was shifting and chirping the tires and also that it was shifting without the clutch

Its is possible to change gears without using your clutch. The only thing is that you have to make sure you have the right rpm in order to change, cause if you don't it will cause more damaged then good. Once your driving, you can switch from second and on. But if your racing then its not possible cause your in the higher rpm's and its not going to be smooth. In other words, your gonna mess up your car if you try to switch without the clutch while racing. Heel to Toe is also a good thing when going into turns and you need to down shift. Alot smoother shift and you don't get the jerking feel. take care tuners

Usually when you try to shift without the clutch, you want to be in the area of 2500 - 4000 RPM depending on the different cars you could do it with.
