OK I have a 2000 elantra and a few months ago I lowered it by cutting the springs (ghetto, I know). I dont know if that has any relevance but a couple weeks ago the tranny started making strange noises when I had the wheel turned all the way to one side or the other. It gradually go worse untill it is a loud popping noise now and the car jerks and pops when turning or accelerating or decelerating. i know the spider gears are fried. What im asking is what trannys will fit or what diff will fit. the junk yards are telling me i can only use a 1999 or 2000 tranny from an elantra. what trannys will fit with or without modification. what diff will fit. i am a professional mechanic, but i cant see paying 700 or 800 for a used tranny if i can go to the u pull it and get one for 50 or 100 then ill be happy. if all else fails ill weld the bastard.

^ what he said. If the boots on the CV joints at the wheels are split, there's your problem.

If lowering caused transaxles to fail there would be more reports than yours ;)

Any Beta transaxle will fit physically, but an automatic will require the years to be close, so the computer will work.

yea I checked the cv axles before and i pulled the trany out this weekend and sure enough the spider gears in the diff were stripped. I clamped the diff in the vice and welded it into one solid chunk of steel. it works for now but i gotta find another tranny, because it's a bitch to drive like this. oh yea it's a 5spd
