Has anyone else experienced the incessant squeal in the air conditioner when the compressor goes on? It is only in the 2002 Elantra GLS. I have only had the car about 3 months and they said it is a known issue in this model, but have no fix. They just put in a new evaporator, but it did not fix it. It is like fingernails scraping on a blackboard. Please feel free to write me at [email protected] if you have had this problem and, especially, if you have found a fix for it.
Thanks, Susan Bilheimer

I would think that would be a compresser problem. Mine moans for a second when I turn it on, but goes away.

Now, I don't get some of these incompentent mechanics. They know about this problem, but have no fix? I would tell the mechanic to go back and look harder. Everything is fixable. And if the mechanic doesn't know how to do it, then he shouldn't be working on cars, especially if its a minor thing like an Air conditioning issue. Mechanics fix cars. They can't say. "Well, I dont know what it is. So your stuck with it." That answer is unacceptable and would take action on that, whether it would be with his boss or Hyundai itself!

Have the problem as well (Elantra 2001 GT)
Brought it back, mach. though was lack of freon. No such luck, then told he would order a new expansion valve. So nothing. But got home after a 500 mile trip, compresor was making bad noise.<img src=/images/forums/snitz/angry.gif width=15 height=15 border=0> Called dealer... will be there monday 8:00 am. More later

Well went, they told me that the change of the expansion valve would take 3 to 4 hours. Did not have the time. Needed to catch a plan ride. Will bring it back later. Tech is pretty sure that's it. We listend to it with a sthetoscoop and with that it sounds like a lot of wind russing trough your a/c system.
Keep you updated.

Had to catch a plane ride. So had to go, while driving to the airport (houston) it was hot and descided o use the A/C anyhow. I though nothing of it. But have been up and down to Houst 3 time now with A/C on, and now it look like my clutch is going out. Make a terible noise. Will go to the dealer next week monday and have them fix it before more wil break don......

The A/C noise is coming from behind my radio , of course. WHere the evaporator is loacted, the hissing only happens when the compressor cycles but it happens ever time.

I didn't realize anyone had responded here and reposted this again. I am wondering how much this noise/frequency/pitch bothers others who are experiencing it. I find it intolerable and Hyundai has basically washed their hands of this problem, as they have not fixed it after four tries and do not deem this a serious issue. For me, it actually hurts my ears, as the last time, they adjusted the expansion valve, which only pushed the noise up in frequency, which made it more painful. It occurs every 45 seconds for approximately 8 seconds.

I had the same "fingernails on blackboard" screeching that I troubleshot down to the a/c's blower motor. The sound wasn't anything the stereo couldn't overpower, but annoying with the stereo off. The blower wheel was rubbing against something in the motor assembly. Maybe?

Hi again,
Just got back from the dealer, the tech. replaced the expansion valve. Did not do any good, sound was still there. He would had to go to Hyundai helpdesk in Atlanta to look for aditional information. He told me that during his class last monday there was an other tech how had the same problem. The problem is in the A/C system. It happens when the clutch kicks in and the Compressor starts to work again. We tested it with a thermometer in the vent opening. At 40F the compressor kicks in and you hear the sound. After the temp. has gone donw to about 37 it slowly rises back up to 40 and sure it does it over and over again.

So make no mistake the sound DOES come from the A/C. For now waiting and hope that the engineer at Hyundai have not F.CK-UP.
