Ok so we gutted the excel to install a kick #$! stereo. When we did that we found all these wires going nowhere so we removed those. We are putting the car back together and have come across a possible problem. We can pull on the steering wheel and it moves in and out between 2-4cm. The washer is on. My question is when they took the wheel off our friend just yanked on it could he have broken anything. The wheels still turn and there is no noise like scraping or squealing. Any suggestions would be fantastic.

Possible bearing failure on the shaft? Does the entire shaft move with the wheel or does the wheel move without the shaft moving?

Pretty sure the whole shaft moves. Can't give a definate answer till later tonight as the car is in my sisters garage and I would have to go check. Would there be any noise like scraping or grinding if the bearing were gone. Because there is none.

I had an old escort that did this. I didn't know anything about cars back then but I was told by a mechanic that It was a broken steering column. I drove it for maybe a year and a half and didn't have any issues with it except the fact that it irritated the **** out of me. It also made no sound, like your problem. So maybe that's it.

But you could try looking at the bracket that holds the shaft up, maybe it wasn't bolted down tightly?

They only removed the steering wheel. So do you think it would be worth while checking all the stuff anyway

Don't know on your year excel but there should just be some simple plastic shrouds under there that just pop off and would let you look at the whole shaft. Don't know if you'll be able to see anything though, it may be an internal problem.

You'll have to let someone else jump in on that. I really don't know what it would look like if it was damaged. As I said, the problem could be internal and you wouldn't be able to see anything....

Anyone have a clue ?

Well we have had a few drama's since I last posted. Here goes hubby got pulled over while driving on a suspended licence needless to say he lost his job (instant dismissal). That was the 8th. He did a days work on the 9th. Then started working at Yamaha on Monday. So we were a bit stressed over the money you know how we gonna pay bills and stuff like that. Thank god for my generous dad who helped us out by lending us some money. Anyway I have found out that the excel steering wheel has a safety feature which includes 2 nylon clips in the steering coloum. Which when in an accident break when you hit the wheel. So here is what happened they yanked on the wheel which in turn broke these 2 clips (1st solution) we will also check the bearing in the top of the steering wheel (2nd solution). Then hopefully all fixed.
