Surgeons General warning:
Cigarette Smoke Contains Carbon Monoxide.

WTF kind of warning is this? What happened to the days when they used to sound serious?? Like if you smoked you may die!
I am not gonna lie I used to smoke pretty reguarly and still will on ocasion. But these warnings need to be a little more serious sounding.

How about this one instead?

I don't know if over there in the States they do this but here in Canada they now put some nasty pictures on Cigarette packs. There is pictures of black lungs that bleed, a bad heart and so on.
Now if that doesn't stop anybody from smoking...what will?

lol They don't do it here but the funny thing is I was thinking that they should as I was typing this post.

It is all political here though. The politicians may not take money from the the cigarette companies anymore but the do take money from the companies that own them. For instance, Kraft and Philip Moris are owned by the same company.

Well, it all started this year, I think. I don't know exactly, because I don't smoke, but I noticed the cigarette packs looking different and I checked on of the packs that were sitting on the table (my step-dad smokes) and I was cracking up laughing.

This is one example:

This is actually a "mild" one. You should see the others.

I think your right! I don't remember seeing those picture last year. I've only started seeing them about six months ago...now they’re every where. I think this is the best one that they have.

Am glad I don't smoke.

But I think this is the scariest one:

It will be interesting to see how these adds affect how many smoke in the long run. I hope they work! People already know the risks, but generally don't care. That's the attitude of my patients who smoke.

I don't think the adds will make that much of a difference. Here is what I do think, the people that smoke will really be affected when Canada finally hikes the prices on cigarettes. They want to bring the price up by two dollars...I think. And they have already been very successful with trying to ban smoking in public places where kid will be. They were even thinking about banning cigarettes all together but having no success yet. Canada is going too harsh lengths to stop people from smoking, which is good.

Heres my thoughts on the smoking issuse. It's not that we don't care about what happens to ourselfs it's just a hard addiction to kick. 90% people who try to quit smoking fail. And nicotine is more addictive then crack. I have been smoking for 10 years now and I have quit before and end up going back to smoking. Even after my Granddad and Uncle died from smoking I still cant quit I really want to but it's hard.

And why we're on the subject of surgeon general warning what is Canada putting on the beer bottles pics of livers with spots, babies burned to death in car wrecks, people who have lost there lives do to some asshole who hit them while they were drunk. Probably not b/c people dont think drinking is bad for ya. But I dont drink at all and never will I personally would rather get in a car with a person who just smoked a pack of cigs then a car with a person who just drank a case of beer. Dont get me wrong I used to drink back in Highschool and college but after that I quit. I never really cared for drinking I didnt like how it controlled me when I drank. So I quit I would rather smoke atleast then it doesn't cloud my judgement about driving. And yes I have driven drunk before and I thank God that I didn't kill anyone too.

You are probably saying but that is different secound hand smoke kills. Yeah it's true it does and but drinking and driving kills more people then secound hand smoke. Are they planning on raising the price of beer in Canada as well it's a drug just like cigarettes so whats the difference.

Everything is this world is bad for you if done to excussively. My main problem with everything is that people who smoke are always looked down on b/c we do smoke well what makes you better huh? It's a dieasse just like any other addiction and people who don't smoke think it's so easy to quit but it's not. Have you ever tried to stop doing something that you have done for years? Was it easy? Just multiply that by ten and you might be close to what a nicotine addiction is like.

Beer and Aclohol can be addicting to put you know something you would still be welcomed into more places then any smoker any day. Why is it good that they won't to keep smokers out of the public b/c of the kids. But it's okay for them to be around people who drink to show them that in order to have a good time you have to drink.

I mean I know kids copy what they see and hear but if you are a good parent and actually talk to your kids about smoking and drinking they should be okay. Because when they hit school they are going to have face a lot tougher issues other then smoking. They'll have to face the issue of drugs, date rapes, racism, and being a outcast.

So they will try anything to fit in do anything to be one of the cool kids. And if you think this is bs then that is your opinion. But you must not have kept your eyes and ears open while you were in school. Because it happens and it will continue to grow and grow.

Sorry this went a little of topic but I think I'm done for now. Just needed to vent b/c I get pissed when people point there ****ing finger at people who smoke and say stupid **** that half the people in this world who smoke already know. And how they casually forget about the other problems and issue around them b/c hey it doesnt' affect us directly so why should I care.

Anyway I dont want anyone to take this as a flame or anything b/c it's not one. I just stating some other issues out there other then just smoking.

Dude, I agree with you totally…no one has forgotten those other issue but it’s like you said you’re off topic. I don’t know how they do it in the States but in Canada as far as I know people are not allow too drink in public parks or anywhere else for that matter where kids might be. If you’re doing it at home well that’s not a public place and it's your house. If people want to subject their kids to that, there’s nothing much anyone can do about that. They also have an age limit for going into bars, that means no minors. And in the city I live in, if you are caught with open liquor walking on the street or driving…it’s a big fine for you. Police here have already beefed up the check stops by at least 40% from what it used to be. As for drugs in my city alone, I think I’ve heard of more then 15 raids in the past 6 months. That’s a lot better then what it used to be like. No one is pointing fingers only at smokers and I could care less if people can’t quit smoking. Cause like you said again, there are more people dying faster then smokers from different things like drugs, drunk drivers and so on. But remember, most of the time people are never forced into doing these things, most of them choose to do these thing. Plus I don’t know how any of this feels because I never drink, smoke or do anything that would harm my body. Yes I have been around people that smoke, drink and do drugs but I have never to fallen into any of that stuff. I do understand how hard it is for smoker to quit because my mom and dad have been trying for the last five years with no success and they have been smoking for more then 20 years.
I don’t want this to become a flame but a think this subject is closed.

I truly hope that one day cigarettes are banned. Ya I know it would piss off a lot of ppl but a few yrs down the road those ppl would be happier then ever when they can finally breath freely! I used to smoke and I quit but in the process of ripping up my lungs I caused my athsma to come out of its dormancy and now I must have an inhaler with me at all times. My doctor told me it should go back into a more passive state eventually but it has been 3 yrs since I quit and the athsma is still acting up though it has become less frequent!

Guilty no one is picking on anyone.

I used to smoke pretty regularly and every once in a while will still have a smoke. So I know what it is like.

Banning is not the answer. Do you guys remember what happened durring prohibition?
If you ban the sale of cigs they will only be sold on the black market. The answer is education. I don't know if you guys in Canada have TRUTH but it is ad capaighn here in the states directed towards youth and they have some hard hitting adds. Maybe they will help.

Your right...about banning it.
But Canada likes making something so simple to something so very hard.
Plus they like spending our money.

About how much do Canadians pay in taxes?

Uncle Sam takes between 20%-25% of my check.

Auto, our tax rate is similar. Ontario residents here have a 15% total sales tax. That really suxs. BSP is right though.... the CDN gov't is doing alot in terms of trying to get the public to quit smoking, which is good. But in the long run it's not us their looking after, it's their wallets. We CDN residents have FREE health care and by getting us to quit smoking will save the Feds ALOT of money (while charging the same amount of taxes of course!). As for the pics on the packs of smokes. I'm sure it has raised some eyebrows but more people found it to be comical more than anything else. It may help people who are thinking about taking up the habit though! The city is in the midst of phasing out smoking in public places all together. That means that smoking will not be permitted in restaurants and bars unless a seperate room with an independant ventilation system is provided. I have quit smoking recently and am very proud of myself. When I had my re-constructive knee surgery I thought It'd be a perfect time to quit. So far I havn't smoked since September 22nd.......COLD TURKEY BABY!!! Hopefully I'll never smoke again.

wish me luck!
