I am constantly comparing the two. I want the best bang cause I don't want to buy a car thats going to have crappy performance.

I'm not going to bore you with the stats on the Tiburon V6 but if you guys can give me your opinions when comparing the 1.8T and VR6 that would be great.

1.8T - 180/174 $26450
VR6 - 200/N/A $28085

The main thing I want is to have a car that can get to running 13 - 13.5 but not stock. VW is known for getting up there, and well I am beginning to think that this 2.7L DELTA in the Tiburon is not going to be able to do it (as suggested by Red).

Remember all the cheap options you get especially with the 1.8T (i/h/e, chip, downpipe and your already over 250hp, then a turbo upgrade and your pushing 300hp). The VR6 is pretty interesting too.

I know the first thing that will come to mind is well the Tiburon looks better. Well true, except for the front (I still hate the front 1st gen still rules). But I would rather beat the better looking car to be honest.

Thanx for any insight!

honestly i cannot help you much here but i can say that i remember when i owned an avenger that alotta the avengers owners who had the v6 avengers were really frustrated at how crappy the engine was and actually mad that the 4banger avengers were able to be tuned better and stronger. i honestly have a feeling that that is the same thing that will come from this new batch of v6 tiburons soon to hit the market.

Wait until the car comes out then we can actually compare the two.

I am bringing this up because ok Red said I could get around 300-350 whp. I think that would be enough. BUT I don't want to blow the engine. I just want to be able to safely run low 13's. Just the Tiburon V6 I am doubting. Even before Red said anything I was slightly doubting it.

VW makes one hell of a durable V6 and even I4. I think Hyundai makes one hell of a I4. Just if I am gonna spend $6,000 worth of parts, I don't want to be blowing the engine, cause Hyundai made an extremely inferior engine (hp and durability) though blowing the engine would be my fault, if I bought a VW it wouldn't have happened.

From what it looks like I should be running at around 8-10psi of boost on a V6. Single turbo application.

I guess my VW propaganda is all coming from

http://www.eiptuning.com

I suppose also I should keep my Sonata till its been tried and provin. But well, I don't want to drive the Sonata no more.

Anyone know what happened with Cheuk? He always kept us up to date with whats going on in Korea.

go 1.8t!

you knew you couldn't start a Vw tuning thread without having me jump in

personally i'd go with the 18t (and i did). just as reliable even when modded (i've been driving 13k miles chipped with 0 problems, and there are members of vwvortex.com that have been doing the same for 50k plus), you dont get the awesome sound of a VR6, but what you are going to get is the added benefit of having a car that was designed for boost from the factory. i know the serious VR6 guys run into major limitations with VW's ODBII and Drive By Wire (which you will learn to hate like i have, especially when you hop into a cable throttle bodied car, then back into yours) on the MK4 VR6's that keep them from running at their full potential with aftermarket turbos. 18t's on the other hand dont have that problem =)

the fastest 18t (this was in a GTI) on vwvortex on the stock turbo is doing 13.75 on drag radials. Chip/Exhaust/Downpipe/Race Gas/Removed Back Seat are his only mods.

there are big things coming on the 18t tuners horizon. ATP's T3/T4 kit for example should put down anywhere from 250 - 400hp depending on tuning and the amount of boost your running. 366 whp is possible on the stock block (see billy18t on vwvortex)

doh. hate to cut my post short (i had more to post) but i gota go catch dinner =(

i'll probly be back to explain the awesome potential of the 18t.

If I was going to get a VW, it would be a 1.8t...probably a Jetta.

ok i'm back! prepre for more VW propaganda!

the stock engine is very tough, billy18t has been on the bleeding edge of the 18t power scene for a while, daily driven very tuned 18t with a custom T3/T4 setup, the tranny can take the abuse of the track, it just took him a while to finally find a clutch setup that would hold all his power, but he finally got it, and from what i know, he's dead reliable.

downsides of the 18t.

if you dont like turbo engines (i personally love them, i think NA is very boring to drive) then you probly wont like the 18t. it's not as bad as other turbo cars go as far as turbo lag (read: WRX) but they accomplish that by a tiny turbo, which really limits you up top, my car just stops pulling as hard after 6k.

i've never really driven a hyundai with a 5spd, so i cant really comment on the quality and smoothness of their trannys, but compared to Honda (who has the best shifter feel in the business imo) and Nissan, the VW feel is very very notchy, and you have a tendancy to grind gears when driving hard (not driver error, the syncros cant keep up before my short shifter, i would race, and there were times when shifting from 2nd to 3rd was like hitting a brick wall. as it is right now i always grind 2->3, but at least i can get it into the gear without much trouble), and if you want a 6spd, for right now your either going to have to buy the Jetta GLI (24v VR6 (the 'new' 200hp VR6), or the New Beetle S (180hp 1.8t). as of now i dont know if they have any plans to bring the 6spd to the Jetta/GTI 1.8t's. Benefits of the 6spd are a totally redesigned tranny that hopefully wont be so asslike. (as you can tell, i really dont like my VW tranny. it's the BIGGEST pet peeve i have about my car. becides the fact it's heavy, and not RWD)

you'll also probly run into little bitch problems, like Window Regulators that fail. when a Window reg goes sometimes you can get lucky and catch the window before it falls all the way too the floor, but you may or may not. if you dont catch it, then you have to roll around town without a window until they can get the window reg in stock at the dealer. it's a major pain in the ass (just ask me, i've had 2 fail, and some people have had as many as 6)

Also be ready for a heavier car. but if your other choice is a '03 V6 tib anyway, i think your going to get a heavy car no matter which car you go with.

anyway. that's my book, if you want any more just msg me on aim or somthing. i'm sure the forum is tired of my rambling. hehe

not to get off topic of Hyundai

but nmap, what is the 25th anniversary Golf all about? I was looking around VW Vortex, I LUV the interior. All I can figure out is its limited production.

Also ATP www.vwturbo.com has completed their kit and is indeed putting out 300whp with their T3/T4 kit. I think its on stock internals too!

Here is my posting
http://forums.vwvortex.com/zeropost?cmd=reply&id=1741526

I do although have complaints to the VWVortex forum admin. Too many posters in the different generations. Your post goes from top to next page within the hour. Recommend putting up a seperate Jetta and Golf forum. Then classify by engine. I know he had that going before.

In any case, I m waiting to hear back from Cheuk about news from Korea about the 2.7L DELTA. I wanna see if he can get me some dirt on the 1/4 mile times and the durability of the engine. The 1.8T is otherwise the way I think I want to go. Maybe in a GTI to save money on mods hehehe.

they may say the ATP kit is done, but believe me, there still is alot of tuning to be done before it runs up to it's potential imo. a few people on the 18t forum have the kit, it's good right now, but will be much better after they tune it properly.

anneversery GTI = supercool edition GTI. Recaro seats, probably 6spd, they havent decided on an engine, but probably the 180hp 18t. and 18' BBS RC Rims all stock. (RC's look sick on every VW i've ever seen, my friend has them on his Jetta in 18x8. they look damn good, and are still pretty lightweight for as much rim is there 19 lbs for 18x8)

Go with the 1.8t. It is so inexpensive to tune, and you get amazing results out of it. I also consider VW's to be luxury car. They certainly are in Europe, and probably will become luxury cars here in the states too.

I am working on right now buying a 3 year old (just out of warranty) Audi A4 1.8T Quattro 5-speed. Loaded. Cheaper then buying a 2003 Tiburon V6 too hehe.

Should be fun. Should be able to pull 350-400 hp easy from going to APR's site.
