Whenever you hear anybody say that torque doesn't matter, now you can just look at them and laugh. As I will explain here, horsepower is merely a product of torque.

If you have a dyno showing torque, it can be easily converted into horsepower using the following equation:

(Torque x Engine speed) / 5,252 = Horsepower

Let's take the Tiburon motor where it makes approximately 121 lb-ft of torque at 3500RPM. Plug these numbers into the equation:

(120 * 3500) / 5252 = 79.9

Which means the Tib makes ~80hp at 3500RPM. Now take that same 120 lb-ft of torque at a higher RPM.

(120 * 6000) / 5252 = 137.1

As you can see, torque is more beneficial in the higher RPMs.

Here's another example. Take Honda's B16A which only makes 111 lb-ft. but 160hp. Now you will see why they use an 8200RPM redline.

(111 * 7570) / 5252 = 160

Now, imagine if the Tiburon made the same 120 lb-ft of torque at the same 7570RPM.

(120 * 7570) / 5252 = 173

Wouldn't that be nice .

Torque is what makes a car quick on its feet. You can have a lot of horsepower and hardly any torque and lose out to a car that has less horsepower then you. For example, VWs baseline engine, the 2.0 8 valve 115 hp, has little power to move that tank....but get behind the wheel and the thing moves. That is because it has low-end torque/horsepower. The car recieves all its horsepower AND torque at 2200 rpms. Step on the gas and all its power is at your finger tips, unlike other cars you have to rev high to milk the power out of it, like hondas. If it didnt have the low-end torque, the thing would crawl its way from 0-60. HOWEVER, once you hit 55mph or so, it gets harder to go faster, because your car has recieved all its power. Thats when you need more horsepower and why they get their asses whopped. Now, Hondas have high end torque and power. that is why the VW feels punchier then the Civic. TORQUE. But that just gets you off the line. The VW takes the lead, but once you hit 50 or so, the civic will catch up and eventually pass because the higher you close to redline, the more power you get.

Now think if you took that same VW and put it's power close to 6000RPM instead of 3000RPM.

lol. Id outrun it on my bicycle. I can't believe VW is still building dinosaur engines with 8 valves in it. The day VW comes out with an engine that has that low end torque goodness yet has a lot of horsepower, we will be teleporting from place to place...no need for cars Their engines are old skool. The V6 is punchy, but the gas mileage is horrible...19 in the city. Still 12 valves, cant even match up with Hyundais 16 valve.

If they are smart, they would fossilize that 8 valve dinosaur and make the 1.8T the standard engine and a Redesigned V6 that clears 200 hp as the upgraded engine. Common sense

VW's warranty is only 2yrs 24,000 miles
The hyundai dealer here sells them too and was trying to talk me into one. I said not with that warranty. He tried telling me that anything that breaks on a car will do it within two years. LOL
OK! I guess I will just go get a '98 cause I will never have to worry about it breaking. LOL
