Whenever you hear anybody say that torque doesn't matter, now you can just look at them and laugh. As I will explain here, horsepower is merely a product of torque.
If you have a dyno showing torque, it can be easily converted into horsepower using the following equation:
(Torque x Engine speed) / 5,252 = Horsepower
Let's take the Tiburon motor where it makes approximately 121 lb-ft of torque at 3500RPM. Plug these numbers into the equation:
(120 * 3500) / 5252 = 79.9
Which means the Tib makes ~80hp at 3500RPM. Now take that same 120 lb-ft of torque at a higher RPM.
(120 * 6000) / 5252 = 137.1
As you can see, torque is more beneficial in the higher RPMs.
Here's another example. Take Honda's B16A which only makes 111 lb-ft. but 160hp. Now you will see why they use an 8200RPM redline.
(111 * 7570) / 5252 = 160
Now, imagine if the Tiburon made the same 120 lb-ft of torque at the same 7570RPM.
(120 * 7570) / 5252 = 173
Wouldn't that be nice <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>.
