I have heard a lot of people say that they have had transmission problems with their Hyundai. I was thinking about doing something about it.

I would like any of you who have had any sort of transmission problem to reply to this post.

95 Elantra 5 spd
bought it brand new
before 100 000 km warranty was up i had 3 or 4 trannies done dont remember exact # any longer. Gears kept grinding after a while going into 2nd into 3rd. I guess me beating it didnt help but still. All was done under warranty so it was ok i guess, just before warranty was up i totaled it so it took care of the tranny problems for good.

Oh on my 92 Sonata the tranny was really good and took the beating hard. Bought the car with 110 km and i beat it for 90 k and it was good till i put a nice hole in the side of the tranny after the clutch blew up but it was time for the talon swap at that time anyway :)

17,000 miles
It is difficult to get into first gear at all engine and vehicle speeds. Also, there are times when I cannot get the car into second gear when doing a 1-2 or a 3-2 shift. Or, when I have the clutch depressed, i try to put it in gear and get that horrible grinding noise. Its been this way since I had the car.<img src=/images/forums/snitz/disapprove.gif

im on my sixth tranny for my 2000 elantra....
problem#

1. accident-bent frame
2. bent frame (not repaired- BASTARDS!)
3 housing crack due to gross negligence
4. housing crack due to the loss of some bearing/gear thing.
5. outdrive seal caused friction and wore away at halfshaft mount, lost all fluid, tranny seized
6. blew apart gating system


what a MESS
iam either really loyal or really stupid

1997 Tiburon FX

After 70,000 miles my 2nd gear was gone. When i would shift into 2nd it would pop out. I took it to the dealer and they ended up rebuilding my 1st and 2nd gears, and i got a new transmission. All under waranty :) :)

Mine just went out!

60,000 miles Something broke off and shot through housing. Haven't found out what yet. I also taken it to get checked five times and they said nothing was wrong. Oh Well.

Tansmission selinoid got stuck, fried all the tranny fluid till it was black. Cause it to fall in N at 3rd gear all the time

traded it in before anything was done about it, new owners had a new transmission put in.
approx 65,000km

1995 Hyundai Sonata 5 speed manaul.
At 20,000 km's i had worn 2nd and 3rd gear synchro rings.
This was covered under warranty, and i was told that it was a $700 (australian) bill for them. After that, i learnt to change my driving style, and i never had any problems with synchros up until i changed my motor and tranny to the DSM type at 100,000kilometres, even with the eclipse gs-t front wheel drive gearbox i am using, i still have had no problems. As a note of importance, those with sonata gearboxes can purchase double synchro-mesh rings for each gear off the net. I don't have this personally, but may look into it, when second and third finally wear out. I have found that with almost all mitsubishi's and hyundai's putting the car in to reverse half the time can be a pain in the a$$ without going into 1st gear first.<img src=/images/forums/snitz/oogle.gif width=15 height=15 border=0>

tranny case cracked for some reason, and now my 3rd gear syncros are messed up haven't gotten it fixed yet cuz it's not too bad but i will soon

Mileage: around 70,000 miles
Type of failure: One of the pins that connects to either the shift or select cable inside the transmission busted. The shifter didn't change gears and I was stuck in the last gear used (Reverse). Towed to the dealership (for free by Hyundai's 5 yr. unlimited Roadside Assistance) and repaired under warranty.

It's still running fine at 76,000+ miles.

2000 Hyundai Tiburon
2.0L

Automatic Tranny Shifts hard from 1 to 2 and then from 2 to 3rd, only happens once car has warmed to normal operating temperature.

Still being looked into. May be because of engine mods, probably not.

Maybe also be the tranny cooler , cooling the tranny below operating temp?

Type of failure: When driving my second doesnt catch, It just happened today,so I dont know all of the specifics, it has always jolted forward when cold but nothing like this.

I have had my transmission replaced once, at about 30k miles. '99 Sonata GLS V6 5-speed (currently @54k miles). There was a-lot od clutch chatter, with the gears slipping, etc. The dealer said that there was a faulty spring in the transmission. I don't think that the transmission system in the Sonata is as durable as say, a Porsche GT2 or a Corvette, but I drive it like it is. I should be due for another transmission in 10k miles. Good thing for the 100k mile warranty!

busted first and second gear synchro's and now have a horrible grinding noise, after 80,000 miles.
Are there any trannies I can swap into my 97 elantra?
