Tranny Issues

1062 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  wilburisthecoolest
So... I cant find first gear, its umm... gone. The shifter feels like it hits a brick wall, just nothing. I just checked the fluid last week, and it seemed ok, it was below the filler plug. It had been popping out of fith while on the freeway, and now this.

A few weeks back it made a strange sound that happened yesterday, a sort of wizzzz bang, and then silence.

But i dont have a first gear, and i live on a hill... and crap.

Can low fluid cause this? Or is it something enternal.:(

Help?.....

*echo*
The jump out of gear is either a worn shift fork or the synco is beyond fukzored. The wont shift into 1st is either the cable/shifter assembly has issues or the gear is toast. Check under the hood when someone tries to shift it and make sure the cable is really trying to move. Low fluid can cause some hard shifting issues, but its not going in at all? That sounds more like something broke.
will it go into gear when the engine is not running?

Nope... not at all...

And the cable is tight and all, and it tries to go into first but it wont. Only first gear, all the others work and engage fine. *sigh* so adding some fluid wont help then? Or should i just try it for the hell of it? Where should the fluid be at? I thought it was just under the filler plug.

Thanks for the help guys.
To be honest I dont think the fluid will help at this point. If its been low that might have caused the damage. Yes the level should be JUST below the fill plug. Good luck man. At this point I am going to say something internal broke. There is a video someone posted about how to take it apart. :ermm: Might be cheaper to do that and see what broke... or get a used trans. Take it as a time to upgrade. Throw in a good clutch and get a tibs trans to replace the elantra unit. Shorter final gear. 8D
The tib tranny.. ok, ill remeber that, and ill try and talk my dad into a lighter flywheel and better clutch, even tho i just got a new one put in less than 6 months ago...

Thanks, and ill be doing the change myself, so ill grab a camera and post up all my problems and issues on changing it out.

Thanks guys.
