well... i got in my car tonight to go to the store, and it started fine.. but when i tried to put it in gear, the shifter wouldn't go... it would only go into 3rd gear, and that's not too easy either. Could this be low transmision fluid, or is it something really bad? Hyundai is already supposed to be hooking me up w/ a new 5spd tranny, because my 3rd gear synchro is off.... so my car is stationary until i figure something out... any ideas, solutions, ect... ANYTHING please help

synchro can screw everything up. That and I know its a dumb question but I have to say. Try putting your clutch in. Check the trans fluid. Let the car warm up for a while then try again

Checking the fluid...the best way to do this is a) check the manual for the proper fluid, and then b) filling the tranny until it starts to run out of the hole (since it is parallele with the ground..also be sure you are on level ground).

Changing the fluid will help shifting tremendously, but I too have the same prob with the third gear synchro. Just haven't gotten the car in to get it replaced yet.

Well, you have to get to the transmission,(the plug for filling/checking is facing the front of the car). You can get to it from underneath, or if you have removed your air box for a cai, you can remove the CAI and get right too it pretty easily. I'll warn you though, it's in there tight! I busted my knuckles the last time I checked my fluid, and the next time I'm using a breaker bar on the p.o.s. to get it loose. (no, I did not overtighten it).

I'll try to find a diagram if I can and post it so you can find it easier.

Do you notice that it doesnt go into first gear at all?Or only sometimes!!
When you first start your car try shifting into REVERSE first then put it in first gear and see if that would rectify the problem.
This is like RESETING all the gears. This always works for me when i have trouble putting it into first gear!!b

i figured out if i start it in 3rd i can drive for a bit then it will shift just fine, 3rd still scratches once shifted to properly.... i brought it to the shop i can't afford to screw it up any worse, hyundai has a tranny on its way on friday so its all good.... the dealership hooked me up with a free rental till i get my tib fixed (01 ford focus 4 door.. its not bad.. automatic and stripped down.. my tib has more power, and handles better... i hope they hurry the fsck up about dropping in the tranny its been on back order since the beginning of december... i was trying to get them to hook me up w/ this v6 sonota they had there but they said it was on hold or some crap.... ah well... they didn't care about my short shifter, or my cai.... and they gave me a free car for a while so its all good....

2 Uniq - that can be more easily accomplished by putting the car in neutral and let out the clutch and rev the engine just for a second. That will get the input shaft spinning again and your shtuff should line up. NYNE, that is my recommendation for you. I have trouble getting into first, and also reverse sometimes. Just put in neutral, rev the engine and you should be golden!
