this is regarding a recent post about transmissions. i was wondering whether it is possible drop a 5 speed gearbox into an auto, and change it to a manual

No, but you can drop the auto tranny out, and put the 5 speed in. Internals are TOTALLY different, you cannot "gut" a auto and make it a manual.

Leave it to Random to Needlessly complicate things.

i drive an auto right now. what ur saying is i can take out my auto tranny and put in a 5 speed? and what's the price tag look like?

What Random is referring to is taking out the entire automatic transmission and components and totally swapping everything with a manual tranny, clutch and gearbox.

i was thinking about doing that to my car. where should i look to get more info on that?

it looks like i'm wearing pants... but i'm not!

2 different people have done it.

One did it for under $1000, but that was with free labor.

Another the price tag was about $2500 including parts and labor.

You would be better off you sell your auto car and buy an 5 speed car.

The switchover is not easy, nor is it cheap. Used 5 speed trannies run between $400 and $1000. But you can get some of that back by selling your auto tranny.

Find a shop familar with Hyundais, or at least imports. Ask them how much to replace an auto tranny. Then ask them how much to replace an auto tranny with a 5 speed. Prices should not differ by more than $500.

Leave it to Random to Needlessly complicate things.
