I read in a old issue of "Popular Science" about a cool new turbo. As many of you might know, a car with a turbo system installed usually has that so called "lag" time; the time when the turbine spins like crazy until it gets enough air and gas. Well.. this special turbo had a electric motor that keeps the turbine spinning at a constant rate, so the moment you go pass the designated rpm rate, the turbo immediately kicks in. That would mean instant power to the wheels and instant launch off from a standstill. Sorry i dont know which issue it was, but I am sure that the product was in the magazine "Popular Science". Go check it out.

P.S. one more thing, I think it is still in prototypical stage.. so dont get your hopes too high.

I read that too. Garrett is doing that. I still think a little lag is a good thing, so you don't rip your car to shreds<img src=/images/forums/snitz/smile.gif width=15 height=15 border=0>

I saw the SCCA rally racing and they say, their car is equipped with some sort of combustion system(electronically) when the driver hits the gas which then turns the Turbine so there is no lag

i was told that an automatic trannie car will have no turbo lag...anyone hear of this?

MST The Libra Rally cars have a system on the engines to keep the turbo spooled up while the driver is breaking/clutching. It is a really WACKED out system. Brian Oldfield explained it to me back at the 1999 Rim of the World Rally in Palmdale.

The ECU notices that the RPMS are falling, and adds fuel, and allows more air in...this makes the engine REV...then the ECU notices that the revs are bouncing off the rev limiter, it then cuts spark, but not fuel,....repeat cycle.

That is how they get the cool big flames out their tailpipe between shifts!

The two systems contstantly battle eachother to keep the engine running at near full tilt to keep the turbo spooled up. the "dumped" gasoline also keeps the engine somewhat cool, at the expense of backfire flames.<img src=/images/forums/snitz/evil.gif width=15 height=15 border=0>


BTW...the problem with the Electric/Exhaust turbo hybrid, is finding an electric motor that can deal with the heat. Once they do that...expect to see a turbo in reverse. Electric Gasoline hybrids that spin a turbo, that spin a generator to make electricity. (In addition to the current Hybrids that generate electricity when braking.)

Random: What you were explaining is an anti-lag system. Its common use in rally racing. The wildest I've seen have a fuel injector and a spark plug int the exhaust system. By lighting fuel in the exhaust, it creates a vacuum on the turbo's turbine, making it spool and diminishing the chances of turbo lag. Of course, the car sounds like a popcorn machine on heroin !!! <img src=/images/forums/snitz/smile.gif width=15 height=15 border=0> ...andit does create some wild backfires!

Problems with certain anti-lag systems is that the heat generated from the ignition retard and overfueling reaches up to 1400Celcius!

You keep this engaged too long and you will be picking up your exhaust pipe and turbine housing from the ground ... in liquid form! <img src=/images/forums/snitz/mad.gif width=16 height=16 border=0>

Another very bad thing for any turbocharged vehicle is a backfire! We have seen busted turbine shafts and obliterated turbinewheels along with splintered housings caused by backfires! In most dizzy (distributor) pulsed engines, if the rotor phase is incorrect you will have the plug firing at the wrong time and cause a backfire through the intake - if the car is turbocharged you will actuallyhear the turbine wheel spooling down from the backfire! --- Woooossshhh sound (not a dump from the BOV, but the turbo spooling down through the air filter.
