Hey one question if the number is bigger does that mean it is a taller gear or a smaller gear? Sorry don't know much about gearing.

With only 175hp (If that is the case), then having a 6th gear is a waste. Same goes with the Celica being only 180hp. IMO, I believe a car should have 200hp at least to have a 6th gear. Anything less horsepower is uneccssary. Hell, my other car has 190hp and it only has 4 gears lol.

its for economy reasons, and better gas mileage. not neccessarily horsepower based.

If you've ever ridden or driven a Celica GT-S, it is really a really short 5 speed with freeway gear (6th). The difference between 5th and 6th is fairly big. You only use 6th when on the freeway for extended periods of time, or really wanna save gas.

The number of gears doesn't matter, the RATIO's Matter. You can make Torque with Gearing, but you cannot make HP with Gearing. So if your engine is lacking torque, they can make up for it with a bunch of small gears (6). If your engine is blessed/designed with gobs of torque...you can get by with fewer gears (4).

Most of the 6 speeds on the market are there as a selling gadget...not because any of the cars NEED or USE 6th gear. To a lesser extent, some manufacturers, also do it to boost the fuel economy of the manual tranny's, so they can sell more gas guzzling SUV's...

Leave it to Random to Needlessly complicate things.
