Hi, I was just wondering if one of these are worth buying. I have read in a catalouge that it gives 5-37 hp, I'm sure its alot closer to the lower end. Can someone that has one tell me how they are and if they are worth it? Thanks.

It doesn't "give" horsepower. It frees up some weight that your engine has to turn. This allows the engine to more efficiently put the power to the road. I havn't seen any dyno results from anyone who has installed one of these on their cars, so I am still skeptical. for the price of an Unorthodox underdrive pully ($300cdn) you could outfit your car with other parts that will net more gains. Save a little more and get headders or maybe a BBTB.

I would do pullies after I have done everything else. To me it seems more cosmetic than performance enhansing.

my $.02

Spider performance "claims" 6-10hp on the dyno for those.<img src=/images/forums/snitz/eek.gif width=15 height=15 border=0> Even if it was 6, that's pretty good for $200.

I have the unorthodox pulley. Yeah, it was a little pricey, but it was noticeable enough. I would say just over 5HP extra to the wheels.

Don't forget the negatives of underdrive pulleys!

Water pump, alternator, power steering pump, a/c compressor will all run slower than factory spec.

I know I wouldn't gamble on one.

The negatives about your a/c and water pump not running factory spec are not a big deal, because the actual pulley isn't much smaller diameter than stock (as some are for other vehicles), the big change is just the weight. So the belts spin at most 10% slower, no big deal, but the weight is greatly reduced.

other than a more responsive engine and perhaps a small increase in power.. the thing most people notice about the underdrive pulley is a negative. I know my tib, when sitting at a light idling, will have noticibly dimmer headlights than stock thanks to the pulley... but all I have to do is touch the throttle and they brighten back up.

Another negative.. the aluminum of the unorthodox pulley is prone to allowing the belt to slip when it wet or cold out.. makes for some nasty squealing belts when first starting out on a cold or wet day.. or after hitting a puddle.

As for the mod being "cosmetic" the only problem with that statement.. you can't see the pulley on the engine, it buried DEEP next to the wheel well.

I do want to say this though. I have had mine now since the timing belt change at 65k... I am at 124K now and I would never go back to the stock pulley.

Ive seen the lights thing, but did that to a point stock. I have this plug into the cig lighter thing and see what the battery and alt. are doing. During the day Im green on both. At night with the lights and radio going Im red. If I turn the a/c, blinkers, and wipers on the thing stops glowing at all.

Ive never had my belts squeal from hitting water but the last belts I used I had to mess with about every 10k miles. They didn't like to stay queit at idle for some reason. I got better belts this time so I'll see if that helps.

Yeah I tell people about the pulley and they want to see it..... I can show them a sliver of silver on the other side of the belt. Maybe if you got a full pulley set, but before you do goto unorthadox.com. Even they admitt doing all the pulleys nets you very little gain over just the crank pulley.

I never had any problems with mine. I'd say do it, if you can get one for a good price.

I won't argue with anybody here about whether or not power pulleys are good or bad for an engine, some very informed people I know will argue they are no good and some will say they're OK. I'll let you all decide for yourself, for those interested here is a link to a technical article on this subject, very good info by the way.

[body]hi i have a question about the crank pulley , my tib is 1.8 but all the unortodox pulley are to 2.0 i like know if is the same pulley and if this pulley work in my car thanks a lot.[/body]
the beta1 1.8L and 2.0L motors are the same exept for the displacement(crank, rods, and pistons), cams, and ecu. The pulley should be the exact same, they're probably listed by most companies as being for the 2.0L motor since it is the most commonly known motor for the beta1 tiburons.

believe it or not.. the beta also came in a 1.6 in some markets.

there are a few minor details in difference between the displacements, but those may also be year related differences too.
