I e-mailed Shawn at Unorthodox Racing to ask about HP gains with their pulleys on our engines. Brendan had already told me he saw a dyno showing a 2 HP gain at the wheels. This seemed odd to me since the Ultra 'S' pulley was supposed to free-up 10 or more HP at the flywheel based on it's light weight (one lbs vs 5.25 lbs for our stock pulley crank.) A loss of HP is normal, but I asked Shawn if we should be seeing such a large loss.
According to Shawn the pulley should be dynoed at least a week after installation and that its "very important to unhook the battery to let the computer start fresh." They have dynoed our 2.0 beta engine and got a range of 6-10 HP at the wheels. Shawn also agreed that dyno
tests varied and could over/under rate any mod. I don't know if the dyno Brendan saw was more accurate, or the ones done at U.R....but I'm hoping for U.R. results!

I was never told to un-hook the Battery, but soiunds like it makes sense. because the computer re-sets itself to stock fuel and would probably disregard any old 02 readings, which may be telling it to give less fuel,..sapping some performance. Not sure about this, and if the same action of un-hooking battery goes for other mods like cam shafts and intake or exhaust.?

you should reset the ecu after every performance mod you do. for the reason that oyu said, the computer has to adjusts to the new mods that you add be it moer fuel or more air.

Would that go for Cams as well?

I would assume the whole theory would apply to any mod that effects performance...couldn't hurt to do it anyway.

stocker, do you mean that I should disconnect the battery,... or go for a drive after I complete a mod? or both?

Maurice,

He's saying that if you didn't disconnect the battery after you did the last mod then basically your computer has learned it on it's own by now. Next time you do a mod, just disconnect the battery for five minutes and then hook it back up.

I'm not so sure about disconnecting the battery after a pulley change.

Disconnecting the battery for a ECU reset is reasonable with intake, exhaust, cams... things that will modify your a/f ratio. But a pulley????

Anyways, the Koreans use an Unorthodox pulley copy and it makes around 5 hp extra at the wheels.

Theres one thing that is bad about those pulleys they have know harmonic dampening ability. It is true that most stock four cylinder can live without one, but when you bolt on a light weight pulley or a flywheel you have shifted the natural freuqency of the crank.

Here's MORE from Shawn at Unorthodox. He says the battery should be unhooked for 15 minutes
DURING installation. This allows the the computer to start fresh.
The key,apparently, is to drive
aggressively after the install to put the computer into a more aggressive
set of programs. Thats what he feels is required to get the most benefit from this mod.

Well, mine should be here today or tomorrow. I'm not going to do a dyno, but maybe I'll "feel" something. And no, I'm not one of those type of people that "felt" a gain by installing the K&N.

well i'm planning to get the pulley within a month and a half but i can just drive to that place because they are right near me, did i say that already??

Ok, first off remember I'm auto so when I got 2 hp from the pulley I'm loosing 3-4 hp thru the drive train. Yes the pulley does screw with the harmonic dampening and it puts lots of load on the #5 cam journal, for our 4 bangers it's not a bad thing if your running less that 200 hp, above that it's a maybe to 250 hp, beyond that you don't want anything puttting or shifting the interior loads around in your motor. The real big deal is that you can't run more than 300 w stereo, the lights don't dim with it but it does reduce the alternators efficeinecy. I like the pulley and it does work as promised, it reduces loss and makes more efficient use of your motors out put, it's not a miricle gain and your not making more power, your just not loosing as much.

wtf is that?? ..so technically, i can go unhook my battery (for 5 min is long enough) and then go drive my car hard..and it will start using the "agressive" program thats..already programed from the factory?? i don't think so..why in the world do we buy these chips, afc's and do piggy-backs then.

Does having that picture for an avatar automatically make you post stupid questions every once in a while?

Not all turbo setups make 250WHP.

The computers in the car "learn" the way you drive and respond accordingly. If you drive like grandma your car will feel sluggish to someone who drives like the 'little old lady from pasadena'. But if you drive like grandma with a powerful car, it still moves better, computer programs notwithstanding. The addons help, if you need them - the stock computer only compensates for so much modification to the drivetrain.

The gains you get from running the snot out of the car after you disconnect the battery will be the same regardless of whether the pulley has been swapped.

My guess is that this is recommended so that the pulley will show maximum gains... pulley gains + aggressive stock ECU gains.

Many people make pre and post modification dyno runs after a couple of battery disconnections in order to best quantify gains... that is level the field... before each dyno run.

Yeah Cheuk,
I think thats what Shawn is trying to get at. I really couldn't figure where he was coming from at first, but I think you're right. Anyway, The pulley is in but there was a belt size problem....I'm posting the whole story seperate from this thread.
