I visited the Washington Auto Show yesterday with my girlfriend, so I suppose I should do write up...

well, impressions on the Hyundai booth was rather good... they had touch screen monitors which displayed the current model line up and vital statistics... the new Sonata was displayed on a rotating booth with a representative eager to answer questions about the sedan... all models were also displayed on the floor for thorough inspection by convention-goers...

the highlight of the show for me, was of course the new Hyundai Tiburon... in person, I must tell you, pictures do this car an irreperable injustice... the car was the GT V6 model in silver, with black leather interior... my first impressions from sitting in the seat were a gripping and secure lockup from the inside... I was suprised at how solidly the door shut; even with the lack of a complete frame around the window... the seat was unbelievably comfortable, with lumbar support and three way controls... the dash was well placed, while the guages were nice and large... looking behind my, I realized it was damn near impossible to have any passengers in the back tho... there was approximately one (1) and a half (.5) feet between the front and back seats...

the buzz around the new car was solid, garnering a crowd of at least 10-15 people throughout the whole show... gawking and waiting their turn to sit in this beauty of a car...

the representative seemed moderately knowledgable, and hinted at an early March release... I really didn't have too many questions thanks to 4doorGL and the rest of the vets at this board... I've learned all I possibly need about the car... :)

overall I'm more than pleased with the outcome, and am eager to purchase this car on its release date...

.yessssss.

Cool<img src=/images/forums/snitz/thumbup.gif width=25 height=18 border=0> another Honda turned Hyundai owner. I owned 2 Preludes(1 Si, 1 Si 4ws) before I got my Accent, which got totalled down at NOPI this year. I then got my current Elantra GLS. Nice to see you aren't baised in your car making decisions. If I get my promotion at work this spring my Elantra will get traded in on a new V6 Tib also<img src=/images/forums/snitz/smile.gif width=15 height=15 border=0>

Glad you liked the car. I m still counting the days till I can get my hands on one. Pretty tough since no release date has been really said.

I found a couple people are trading in their Integras, Accords and Civics for the Tiburon. There was one guy that was a hardcore Integra fan and then all of a sudden got to test drive the Tiburon V6 against his car, and a couple others and he was like...sorry guys I m converting to Hyundai. (was on a prominent board for Honda too)

To be honest when you want to buy a car, that is a coupe, it comes down this (in Canada at least & that are quality cars err imports).

Tiburon V6 6-speed
Accord V6 4-speed auto
RSX Type-S 6-speed
Mazda Miata
MB C230 Kompressor 6-speed ($25k)
Toyota Celica GT-S 6-speed

So going through the list:

Accord only comes in an auto with a compariable engine which no offense to Honda but its a mistake.
RSX-S mixed reviews even from Honda ethusiats.
Miata is a chick car and not quite as fast I don't think as the new Tiburon when it comes down to weight/power.
MB is a bit pricey but its a MB.
Celica GT-S, I personally have problems with the styling, its ugly to me, but thats my opinion.

The only car I think that kicks Hyundais butt is the Nissan Sentra V-Spec. If they work out the millions of problems that the owners are having they would have a winner. I think thats a shame for Nissan cause they are making an inferior car, but well when you pay $5,000 less then what Hyundai can even offer for a cheap affoardable car, figures. So probally come 2003 when the columnists get their heads out of their asses I think the Tiburon and V-Spec are going to be compared quite a lot. Even though the V-Spec has a 200lbs advantage over the Tiburon.

The way I see it though. Not to start a flame war.

Fat chicks like sedans cause they are easy to get in and out of. Hot, skinny model type chicks like the sports coupes. So well while your hauling your 300lbs girlfriend in your V-Spec, you are hauling a 100 lbs model in your Tiburon V6. So everything works out in your favour when you line them up <img src=/images/forums/snitz/smile.gif width=15 height=15 border=0><img src=/images/forums/snitz/smile.gif width=15 height=15 border=0><img src=/images/forums/snitz/smile.gif width=15 height=15 border=0><img src=/images/forums/snitz/smile.gif width=15 height=15 border=0>

Miatas may be chick cars, but they are rwd roadsters too, and can easily lay down big numbers on a relatively stock engine as well as "borrow" the two rotor from a rx-7.

But then again, i love roadsters.<img src=/images/forums/snitz/thumbup.gif width=25 height=18 border=0>

I think the Spec V will be compared with the new Tib alot. They are in the same price range and appeal to the same car buyers. I don't think the Spec V will have any advantage in performance. I haven't seen anything from road tests that seems beyond what the new Tib should be able to do. The Spec V times I've seen are around 7.6-7.8 0-60, and about 15.7 1/4 mile. I haven't seen the inside of the Tib yet, but I hear it is very nice, no second seat
to the Spec V. The styling and warranty differences will tip the scales for some.<img src=/images/forums/snitz/wink.gif width=15 height=15 border=0>

Hehehe, my g/f is 110lbs., so I guess I'm good to go.

As for the V-spec outperforming the new tib. No way in hell. It's completely under-achieving it's power, even after they lowered the numbers. I haven't heard a single person that's been impressed with one yet.

Time slips for the Spec-V that I have seen have been between 15.2 - 15.5.

Thats equivalent to the RSX-S so well that means the Tiburon is gonna need to run sub 15's to be better. I like looking at the Mazada MX-6 which is the same weight just about as the Tiburon V6 except 20 less hp and 10 less lbs-ft (circa). Anyway the MX-6 is running a 15.7 about.
