It should say somewhere in the owners manual the engine capacity in cc's. Every 1000 cc's is 1 litre of displacement. (ex. 1998 cc's is considered to be a 2.0 litre)

There's a canister you can look for under the battery, if it's there it;s a spec A tib (aka 1.8l) if not it's a 2liter.
Damn I did a search but couldn't find the topic, batlord posted a good pic a while back,... but I can't find it.

This may help some, though the codes are for Australian cars

VIN Codes

Each car is given a unique number when it is made, called a Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN for short.

The VIN in your Hyundai is more than just a random 17 digit number. Your VIN provides a lot of information about your car. It is stamped into the upper half of your firewall (in engine bay). What does it all mean though...?

KMHUE31NPPU113460

The first three letters designate your car as a Hyundai, with the manufacturer's code of KMH shown.

KMHUE31NPPU113460

The fourth letter is specifies if the car is left or right hand drive. Right hand drive is shown as either U, left hand drive is shown as V.

KMHUE31NPPU113460

The fifth letter specifies the body type of your Hyundai

E
D

F

A

K

W
two door
three door

four door

five door

panel van

wagon

KMHUE31NPPU113460

The numbers 1, 2 or 3 relate to the car's trim grade: low (L), middle (GL or LS), or high (GS, GLS).

KMHUE31NPPU113460

This digit specifies if the car is fitted with retractor seat-belts for the driver and front passenger. The number 1 means yes, O means your car is fitted with a manually adjusted seat belt. All Hyundai's sold in Australia are specified with 1.

KMHUE31NPPU113460

This digit is the key to your engine capacity. For Australian specification cars, the following codes apply...

J
R

N

M

F

S

T
1.5 litre for X1, X2, X3 Excel and S-Coupe
1.6 litre for the J1 Lantra

1.8 litre for the J2 Lantra & Coupe

2.0 litre Sonata

2.4 litre Sonata

3.0 litre Sonata

KMHUE31NPPU113460

This digit is mathematically determined to validate frame numbers.

KMHUE31NPPU113460

The next letter specifies the date of build of your Hyundai. The letter used depends on the model Hyundai you have.

X1 Excel

F 1 July 1985 to 31 August 1986

Don't be so dissapointed. There is not much difference in the engines and the gearing in the tranny for the 1.8ltr is shorter.<img src=/images/forums/snitz/thumbup.gif width=25 height=18 border=0>

Same boat, turns out an ECU, crank + rod replace and you too can have a 2.0L... All that for 7whp. You make the call
