whas the difference between a super charger and a turbo? which will give me better performance. what are my gains? and how easy are they to install? and if anyone knows if they are legal in canada?...thanks

THIS IS IN MY 99 ELANTRA!!
A turbocharger uses the exhaust flow to power the turbine which pushes the air into the engine.

A supercharger uses a belt and pully to power the turbine to push the air into the engine.
A turbo charcher uses a turbine powered by exhaust to power a compressor which compresses air with centifugal force. (Dynamic)

A supercharger is a pully, chain, or gear driven compressor. The revolutions in which the compressor is turn is usually increased by a gear box. (dynamic or positive replacement)

2 different types of compressors Dynamic and Positive replacement.
Positive replacement: pistons, rotors, screws... They suck in a certain amount of air compress it and release the pressurized air into the engine. They can only take in a fixed volume of air. (like a bike pump can only suck in the amount of air that the piston displaces)

Dynamic: cetrifugal, axial
They are like a fans they increase the velocity of the air. That velocity must be converted into pressure so the velocity is decresased.
When velocity is decreased pressure and temprature increase.
When velocity is increased pressure and temprature decrease.

Cetrifugal force think of a mary-go-round as it go faster the kids are being forced to the out side. No a compressor wheel on a turbo work the same way.
The kids = air Mary-go-round= compressor wheel
Remove all bars from the mary-go-round make it into a spinning circular platform. build a circular wall around it with a door. (circular wall = compressor housing) (door= compressor housing outlet) (the fall from the tree onto the mary-go-round = compressor inlet)

Now one kid is standing in a tree above the mary-go-round, the kid jumps off onto the mary-go-round and lands in close to the center, he suddenly gets forced to the outside and thrown off. He hits the wall and goes splat. His velocity was decresed by the wall and he was compressed. Now that he is an inch or 2 shorter and other kids are flying at him, he does not want to try to get out by jumping on to the mary-go-round and jumping up to the tree, he wants to get out of there so he takes the door. The door leads to the engine.

Why am I going this far?

WHAT KIND OF BOOST AM I LOOKING AT FOR MY 99 ELANTRA WITH A SUPERCHARGER OR A TURBO..HORSEPOWER WISE....WHICH IS BETTER FOR MY ENGINE?
Try searhing/browsing forced induction forums. There is too much info available to and we rather not spoon feed it to you. You can not really just slap stuff on an engine unless you know what that do, how it works and how it works with an engine.

Oh but THANK YOU FOR DOING SO!!!

Bwahahahahaha!!! Best turbo analogy EVARR!!11!!splat!!1!!

You mind if I steal that one? it may not be the best example, but it's entertaining, to say the least.
Feel free.
supercharger uses about 25% of your engine power but you get 50% gain so you actually make out better then a turbo and a supercharger takes no time at all to spool the turbo takes a few seconds cause exhaust has to pass thru it fast enough first
I really do not see any spooling involved with a supercharger since a superchargers speed is proportional to that of the engines.
blower and turbo charger please

a turbo is a supercharger lol.

Do you want to take off fast or accelerate fast on highways?

they give you different things.

I would go with a blower in the elantra instead of the turbo, but the turbo is cheaper to piece together imo.
