My right front wheel bearing is in need of replacement and I was wondering if anyone has replaced one of these themselves. Particularly the Tiburon... I would like to save the cash and do it myself, and I like to get my hands dirty.

If anyone has comments or suggestions I am all ears.

I have had a look at the HMA Service web page and it seems to look fairly simple.
I worked on Formula Ford and Formula 2000 race cars and packed and installed bearing into the racing cars uprights. Not too difficult providing you are carefull and use lots of grease.

Comments... Suggestions?

In my experience with replacing bearings (these jobs paid for my beer at college), you want to make sure that you remove ALL old grease before installing the new bearing. If you do it outside, be sure that it isn't windy out where it could pick up dust during the installation.

I think you can pick up a grease packing tool fairly cheap. I would recommend using synthetic grease.

Ya don't need grease. The new ones are already assembled.

You do need a hydraulic press though.

Do ya think ya could tap them in with a block of wood and hammer?

We have done that on occasion when a press wasn't available.

If I'm not mistaken...they need to be pressed in with a 10 ton press. I doubt you could duplicate that with a mallet and a block of wood, if so, you would damage the bearings getting them in.

Apparently there have been a lot of problems with bearings, the product,..and even replacement is not pack wiht enough grease, solution, break seal and repack wihjt more grease, ...the downside is that the seal may allow contaminents in and cause the same problem again.

Cotton,... if I'm not mistaken, the 1st gen Tib's Wheel bearings are part of the 5 year powertrain warranty,... But the 2000+ ones are only 3 years.
(Wonder if Hyundai Figured something out, to make more money)
Have you checked?
Just a thought to save ya some bucks

I asked the boys in at the service department at my work and they said that it is definately a common problem in the Tiburons. Fixed it for free!<img src=/images/forums/snitz/thumbup.gif width=25 height=18 border=0>
