For us northern ppl, it's getting to be that time of year again!! And I was just wondering what you ppl had gripping you to the ground (i.e. tires).

I just bought a new set of Dunlop Graspic DS-1s. They are supposed to be some of the best winter tires ever. I got a great deal seeing as how my girls dad sells tires!! hehehe. Tell us what you others are using!!!

I have the stock Hankook tires on my car. That is why I haven't gotten my new rims yet. Cause I would spin out all over the place in winter snow They are by far the best snow tires. We got 2 feet of snow here last winter and I didnt have any trouble. After class, it was icy and slippery out. I started out in second gear and tires didn't spin out. As I chugged along nicely, I saw some funny things. A riced out eclipse spin himself around in a circle. Another riced out civic trying to impress by going fast, skidding and missed the turn and ended up on the grass. I guess they were too "cool" to switch back their low profile tires w/17" rims to the normal stock all season radials. Even those huge ford expeditions were having great difficulty. But me...No problem. Along with the car being good in the snow, Its more of the driver too. You don't need that traction control, stability control, ABS or that other crap. Front wheel drive, a 5spd stick, and a good driver can make all the difference in the world.

Last winter it was bad here, so snow tires are a must this year. I'm gonna leave them on my stock rims and get 17s in the spring. Haven't checked out the Dunlops, I was going to get Blizzaks. Ice traction is the most important factor. You only get stuck in snow, ice can be deadly.

Well, I wanted Nokian Hakkapeliittas (believe me or not, that is the correct spelling), but I don't know if I can pull the money together, but they are suppose to be the best. At the Rally of the Tall Pines in Bancroft, Ontario last year, the majority of modified Imprezas and the Audis were shod with Nokians. Of course if I can't buy those then I will go with the Yokohamas, due as well to their association with rally. I think I may lower the overall cost by removing the factory tires and selling/tossing them and putting the snows on the factory rims and then upgrading to 15" rims and some sweet summer tires next spring.

good choice... the guardex 720???

but the thing is, if it snows alot, those tires suck in alot of snow. They are great on ice and packed stuff but... not in free snow.

Well, I have purchased my tires and they are neither of the two I mentioned above! I have decided on the Toyo Observe X-10 in 185/60/14, I am putting them on my Gsi factory rims and next spring I am buying 15" lightweight rims with Toyo Proxes T-1. I will let you all know how the Toyos perform, I am hoping they turn out to be as good as Blizzaks, they are the same price, only the Yokohama Guardex 720's and the Nokians are more expensive. Please snow soon.

Nokees as we call them in Central NY rock... We swear by them... Some enthusiasists have issues with the belts ripping out, but they have much bite... Blizzaks do well, and I've even found a cheap set of Coopers that performed well in deep snow and ice...

Last year Michelin Artic Alpines were the highest rated tire, and I found out after purchasing that the performance to be most disappointing... I honestly felt like I would have been better off with the GY Aquatreads in the snow...
